I've noticed the IT sales people in NZ are very likely to use "pushy" sales techniques, and pull figures out of their ar*e.

In the latest case, it's Bryan Stibbard, Australia & New Zealand area Vice President of Commvault

In an event invitation, he promises Simpana 10.

* Boost workforce productivity by 25%

* Cut infrastructure costs by up to 50%

* Take an exponential leap forward in the way you look at your data.

Isn't it wonderful when your statistics are nice even numbers, like 25% and 50%? Almost sounds made-up doesn't it. :annoyed:

I actually have a lot of experience with Simpana 9. This backup and archive software took almost a year to set up, with countless hours of Simpana support on-site.

Simpana replaced a perfectly sound backup solution from ArcServe and Microsoft (SQL database backups), which has been working flawlessly for a year.

Our infrastructure architect attended a Commvault seminar, and when he heard of "CommVault's modern approach to data protection and archive", he decided we needed it.

The project manager was also keen, though he's one of the least "hands-on" experienced people on our team.

Both approached the CIO with a proposal and after getting approval, 5 months, finally talked to the system engineers.

Of course, had they talked to the system engineers actually backing up and restoring, we might not have decided spending hundreds of hours, and hundreds of thousand of dollars.

But hey, what do the actual hands-on system engineers know, compared to a young infrastructure architect, attending sales seminars? :mad:

I'm not saying Simpana's solution to backing up and archiving is inferior to "old-fashioned" techniques, but it really falls apart in cost and complexity to benefit ratio.

Honesty in some of the IT conferences if you played a drinking game for the amount of times they say opex and capx you might be silly enough to buy their product. Comvault is Comvault, and is a pretty good product. But yeah dicey sales tactics or selling to you like you're and idiot and why would you even consider the opposition is a real turn off.

Commvault wrote Simpana which has lots of features . Mostly it used for backing up enterprise servers, such as Microsoft volume snapshots, Microsoft Exchange .

It also supports other platforms like Oracle .

It's amazingly expensive, and very complex . End-users can restore some of their own files, like Word documents, hence the savings .

However for "serious" restores, like automated SQL restores, or server backups and restores, you need a lot more training, even when compared to similar products .

Microsoft SQL DBA's tend to hate Commvault:

While every DBA knows how to restore a backup from Microsoft's built-in tools, Simpana requires a great deal of esoteric knowledge and training to use Commvault . Finally version 9 doesn't support data cubes, so almost useless for Microsoft data warehouses .
