1338371 2013-04-25 07:26:00 My son (39 years) has just undergone a quadruple heart bypass operation. Just wondered if any of you guys have had this done. It has been a nightmare come true for me. Just driving up to Waikato at different times and having to cope alone with all the problems and this all entails, leaves me completely buggered. I wonder if any of you have been through this and how you have coped?

1338372 2013-04-25 08:00:00 That's young, I haven't been through anything like that. My neighbour has but she is 86 gary67 (56)
1338373 2013-04-25 08:02:00 My husband had that done in Dunedin in 1990 at age 47yrs . It was a real good fix - he completed the 12km fun run a year later - and was home, before me!

The surgery/post-op recovery time was really stressful for me - I had no support in Dunedin . Spent a fortune on phone calls . Hubby was operated on Tues, home (which entailed a 120km drive) the following Monday .

While he died last year, it was from cancer, not cardiac problems that led to his death .

If you would like some more support or discussion with me - just PM me - I would be happy to try to help . :)

1338374 2013-04-25 08:46:00 Been there done that! about 10 years ago. Pretty much a routine operation these days. All going well the doctors will have your son briefly up on his feet in two days and discharged from hospital in about five days. In my case the test for discharge was the ability to walk up one flight of stairs unaided. Most uncomfortable after effect of the operation is from where they crack open the rib cage, this can be quite painful, particularly getting in and out of bed. Should take four to six weeks recuperation before resuming normal duties. tutaenui (1724)
1338375 2013-04-25 08:58:00 Lakewood I had a triple done at 58. The surgeon said it would give me another 15 years of life, 16 so far. The physical healing was ok. The long scar on the chest was never very painful. The long cut inside my right thigh, where they took spare vein, was very painful. Walking pulled the stitches. I was a month off work then back to work part time. I only lasted a month & got 'laid off'. I never worked again.
Two pieces of artery taken from my chest plus that piece of vein did the job. It is one hellofa big shock mentally, took me a long time to get over it. Mainly because I was told by Income Support that I would not work full time again. When my 'Screen' came up at IS office, in big red capitals it said.."TERMINAL". I asked about this & was told that it meant that the Job Center would not accept me on their books. Can you imagine how I felt at 58?
So...your son will be ok as long as he follows the new rules & conditions. He will get over it. So will you.I do feel for you tho'. Children are not supposed to die before their parents, so he has a new leae of life. I wish you both well.

I agree with Tutanuis post. PJ

1338376 2013-04-25 09:10:00 Thanks for the replies guys. It is just hard, because his dad died from heart disease in Waikato about 10 and a half years ago. They could do nothing for him, because there was too much damage. At least my son has a chance now.

1338377 2013-04-25 09:47:00 Sorry to hear about your son's health. It is good that he is getting treatment now. Do you have a friend who could drive up with you to the hospital for company and support?

Take care and don't forget to look after yourself as well.

1338378 2013-04-25 10:04:00 Wow that's young! I had a triple about 10 years ago at age 44 - a big shock mentally: I was a little overweight, but never smoked, no high blood pressure, no family history, no diabetes and no previous symptoms. Two of the arteries on the front of my heart were 100% blocked and the other was 85% blocked. A ticking time-bomb. The cardiologist told me I was one of the lucky ones - 50% of heart attack patients don't make it to hospital!!

The physical stuff is pretty straight-forward to get through - listen to the doctors and the physio, do the exercises, take the medication. I was back at work in two months.

The mental stuff is harder - it feels like your body doesn't love you anymore, like it's betrayed you. But if you're in that place, and thinking that way, you've won. Because you're still above ground - which is far better than the alternative!

Accentuate the positive!!

1338379 2013-04-25 12:14:00 When I was 31 I had a pacemaker put inside me due to being born with a slow rate. Arrived unconcious and put into ICU then CCU for a week. I didn't recall anything for the first weekend. Being the person I wasn't worried at all. Tip top shape now with 6 monthly checks before the battery needs to be replaced which means a new unit.
