1337812 2013-04-21 01:24:00 I'm looking for a USB to USB data transfer cable. Reading up online, it would appear they need to have some electronics added to avoid destrying the computers. Anyone know if there is a store in Christchurch that sells them? Could buy online but for something like this I'd rather buy locally.

And yes, I have tried googling ;)

An ethernet cable is better, GigE doesn't even need a crossover cable you can just plug it in both ends and assign an IP address in the same range then use windows file sharing.
Or to be sure or if it's 100M ethernet use a crossover cable.

1337814 2013-04-21 03:11:00 I agree, using a network cable is easier IMO.

It's not so much that "gigabit ethernet doesn't need a crossover cable" as it is "Most gigabit network cards support Auto MDIX": en.wikipedia.org

I thought it was part of the standard, on googling it though you're right and it's optional. However in practice I've never come across a gigabit ethernet NIC that needed a crossover.
Incidentally to me supporting auto MDIX and not needing a crossover is the same thing and easier to understand :P

1337818 2013-04-21 22:23:00 Yeah I came across *one*, YEARS ago (Almost a decade?)... but I agree ;) Chilling_Silence (9)
1337819 2013-04-21 22:29:00 I got one from Dick Smiths a few years back.
Yes, Ethernet is faster and easier, but not an option when one of the laptops didn't have an ethernet port.
