1337364 2013-04-18 11:13:00 Local business is going broke because anyone who has a computer can import goods without a permit. The Government is missing out on millions of dollars worth of customs duty and GST.
* All imports which require New Zealand funds would require a permit. The permit would take into consideration the local availability of similar goods.
* All imports would be subject to Custom's duty and GST.
* Strict attention should be paid to overcharging, as it was in Muldoon's day.

1337365 2013-04-18 11:57:00 Yay! Let's go back to the bad old days of the 1970's where you had to apply to the Reserve Bank to import anything. Just watch the price of those imported goods go up (once landed) due to scarcity value.

If regulation is the answer, it must be a damn-fool question!!!

Yeah great

I remember that when I wanted to import something I had to go to the post office many times to get some British Postal notes!

NZ was "rich" then because the UK bought all of our lamb and we did not import much. (we wern't allowed to)

There was only one tv model available the Philips K9.

A bit like North Korea!

NZ businesses have to get used to "the world price" for things.

NZ Business have to get landlords to reduce their rent

NZ workers have to get used to lower wages

NZ fat cat CEO's need to reapply for their jobs.

1337367 2013-04-18 23:04:00 Yep, that scheme worked sooo well in Russia didnt it.
We'll have industry that could only survive by being proped up by Govt handouts.

You get factories churning out poorly made, obselete goods at stupidly high prices....wait, that was NZ in the 70's
Lets get real, the actual reason's NZ industry is dying:
we dont have a local market of a Billion consumers & our wages & setup/infrastructure & other costs are of 5x that of our competitors

Much more realistic will be to move the whole country north & attach it to China, then let in 100Million immigrants & get rid of minimum wages. That will get our local industries up & running again

1337368 2013-04-18 23:23:00 @1101

You are dead right we need a much bigger population to be more efficient and cost effective.

Singapore has more people than NZ in the size of Lake Taupo.

Look at population densities around the world and you will find that ours is very low.

1337369 2013-04-18 23:32:00 I am tending to agree with our population size. i never liked the idea as nz is so good, especially New Plymouth with only 60k people and we complain when we are stuck in traffic for 30 seconds. Gobe1 (6290)
1337370 2013-04-19 00:57:00 Here are some advantages

More people to pay for only one Prime Minister
More people to pay for the same fat cat CEO salaries
More people to pay for only one road from Auckland to Wellington.
More people to pay fro each broadband ufb line etc.

Every importer will sell more items so they can charge less and still make the same amount of money.
Manufacturers will have bigger runs.

Companies become bigger so that employees have more opportunities for promotion etc.

Artists have more people to sell to.
Singers etc have more people to entertain and buy their records.

The whole country becomes more extinct and less sleepy.

1337371 2013-04-19 01:57:00 Well,I kind of like 'sleepy'...But if you think we need more people, let us have a wider selection of people, ie not all of one ethnic background and then lets not let them all settle in one suburb or city.Spread them around a bit. Back when there was large numbers of Dutch immigrants, they were split up and they did not have the chance to form 'Little Holland'. They had to assimilate, after all lets not make the 'Kiwi' as we know him an endangered species. ruup (1827)
1337372 2013-04-19 02:10:00 sleepy....uncrowded...laid back.... thats OK if you want a sleepy country in General.
You cant have sleepy this & 1st world that.

Problem is, most demand 1st World services (hospitals, police, education, power etc etc) & NZ isnt a 1st world economy.
We are a RURAL/agricultural/tourism based economy ie 2nd/3rd world
Thats why the country is broke & has been at the bottom of the OECD rankings for as long as I remember (we 2nd to last, just after Turkey some years back)

1337373 2013-04-19 02:26:00 Cheese Digby. How is our country (not yours apparently) going to become more extinct?
With your inspired plan it is going to become an anthill, already an oversupplied commodity.
We have to have a Prime Minister I suppose. We should each put in 2c a year to pay him. I know it's more than he's worth, but we can be a bit generous.
CEOs to be paid entirely by optional customer and staff donation; that should sort out who is worth what.
More people using that single Ak/Wgtn road.
More people fighting for the mite of bandwidth on overpriced offer from Telecon.

Importers will obviously be scrambling to sell to the lowest bidder, just like they always have. ;)
Not only manufacturers will have bigger runs (Toilet paper production will be our biggest industry).

Companies become bigger, - and all on that single road?
Artists will do what artists do: not a lot in an anthill.

Singers worthy of the name are extinct already. Sleeping will be in shifts in your utopia.
