1359141 2013-11-15 17:24:00 This is the system to use if one is uncomfortable with Win8:

The first screen shot shows it has the XP shell, but closer examination of the second screen shot reveals it is no other than our good old friend Windows For Workgroups.

You can't get much more retro than that :banana :groan: :badpc:

1359143 2013-12-05 04:07:00 Just for the records, we finally got the fibre-optic connected and wound up having to install "Classic Shell" to find anything. It worked a treat and whilst there was the odd “Charm” that didn’t show up it was a real help.

Pity a 3rd party has to develop something to make Win8 work for ordinary people. :groan:

Anyway, the mate is sailing the seas somewhere between Weipa and Gladstone at the moment with his new laptop and I suspect I may have heard if he’d biffed it overboard. :D

I know plenty of "ordinary people" who can manage Win8 quite fine, ranging from very young kids to those well into their 80s.

Had one guy today, wasn't to keen on 8, so after fixing the computer, gave him roughly 5 minutes in instructions, (literately) and his remarks afterwards were complete opposite once he had learnt.

Guess if people dont want to learn thats their decision I guess.

1359146 2013-12-05 06:46:00 I use 8.1 at work every day and now that I have it set up to do what I want it to do its ok but still wouldn't be my first choice at home. I still think the idea of incorporating the Playskool screen into a desktop OS was plain stupid of MS.

I mean they are clever enough to create 2 versions in one so surely it can't be that hard to just make 2 versions

1359147 2013-12-05 07:04:00 The problem with two versions, it would be to confusing for many people. ( too many options)

Classic example on Tablets: ask some people what the difference between Windows RT and Windows 8

I cant tell you how many times lately I've gone to right click the start button to get to the control panel or pressed the windows key on XP or W7 and gone -- On crap, old OS :annoyed: -- doesn't work as expected.

Well it strikes me as really odd that anyone would go to so much trouble to write the programme (Classic Shell) if everybody found Win8 so straight forward to use.

Clearly Win8 was written for intellectual giants. Well it has Charms.

1359149 2013-12-05 07:23:00 Clearly Win8 was written for intellectual giants Far from it.

The general problem is some people don't like change or dont want to change. (thats their choice) Thats why Programs like classic shell exist.

I upgraded a guys XP to W8.1 only last week, told I'd give him some instructions on how to use it because he was crapping himself thinking W8 was way beyond him. Well after a cuppa, some banter/ fooling about, while talking and showing him how W8.1 works, he finally said OK hit me with these problems everyones talking about ------ I laughed and said you have been doing them for the last 10 minutes ---- :horrified Are you serious Was his reply ;) Yep I said --- Cant repeat what he said after that it would get bleeped :D

Serious Question -- What are people going to do when programs like classic shell dont work any longer ?

Bet if Apple did their OS first the way MS did with W8 it would be the best thing since sliced bread :p After all the iPad really made tablets take off again, followed closely with Androids.

Just some info, Classic Shell - Initial release November 2009 -- this was because people who didn't like Windows 7 could stick with an older interface.

History --- wikipedia.org/wiki/Classic_Shell (en.wikipedia.org) -- Sound familiar :D
