| 1359121 | 2013-11-09 04:27:00 | On that screen there needs to be a Close Icon, a Mail Icon, a Google Icon, a Skype Icon and maybe a couple of others. That’s it. I wasn't going to reply again, BUT you have hit the nail on the head so to speak. For some people who for what ever reason have problems, you put the main programs they will use every day, and maybe a few that they may use only sometimes. At a later date you can always add more. To remove a tile, right click unpin from start. you really do want to leave the Desktop Tile, just in case. you said it was 8.1 -- OK heres some advise, and its NOT being arrogant as I'm being accused of, these WILL work. Take it or leave it: 8.1 can boot directly to desktop once you change a setting ( no need to even go anywhere near the tile menu), Instructions on site how-to-boot-to-desktop-mode-in-windows-8-1 (www.pcworld.com) To put a icon on the desktop from the tile interface right click it, along the bottom open file location, then right click the icon send to desktop, or pin to start ( which ever you want or both) shutdown -- right click the windows icon bottom left corner / shutdown OR as I've done for some people create a shutdown button - how-to-create-a-windows-8-shutdown (www.pcworld.com) You can pin it to the start screen or taskbar as well. With the new Start button 8.1, right clicking it gives all the options that were in previous versions, no need to go anywhere near the charms menu. Edited: Please note the previous two answers (only saw after writing/posting this) W8.1 can be customized a lot to the users needs, a lot more than previous versions. if in doubt a google search will generally bring up instructions on what to do. |

| 1359122 | 2013-11-09 07:38:00 | Thanks all for your help, Ill report back next week on progress . My present thoughts are to see how some of your advice works and keep Classic Shell until last resort . In the meantime: Wainui, I didnt accuse you of being arrogant . But your claim of this OS being the best as a fact, is offset by the number that share my initial view that its crap, a dog, it barks . Ok, thats my and others first impression and doesnt help the Microsoft cause . Remember the old adage about First Impressions . I suspect Microsoft realise the error of their ways and hence 8 . 1 as damage control which as far as I can see is another epic fail . Yes, theyve learned nothing since the Win 98 & Win 98SE saga . It would be a shame if a technically excellent OS was stuffed by premature release just in order to satisfy the bean counters, but Im starting to think that is what may have happened . Anyway, I guess time will tell . :) |

| 1359123 | 2013-11-09 09:53:00 | BM - it wasn't you that accused me. W8 is just like any other OS ( if you think about it) there are always changes with each version. The biggest "problem" is Microsoft changed so much in one go with W8, where as previous version it was a bit here, a bit there etc. |

Meaning if it was spoken then the tone in a persons voice will tell you it wasn't meant to be smart, showing off but helpful. Sorry but you got the wrong end of the tone /meaning. ;) (Note the wink thats meant as a cheeky response) |

| 1359126 | 2013-11-09 21:16:00 | The biggest "problem" is Microsoft changed so much in one go with W8, where as previous version it was a bit here, a bit there etc. Oh I think that sums it up, they just plain outsmarted themselves. As an analogy, over the years I have travelled out of NZ a fair bit and usually my travels involved a Rental Car. Now I dont think I have ever had the same model twice, but on every occasion I have been able to drive the car from the Rental Companys yard. Sure, up the road a bit it has been a case of how the hell do I change the station on this confounded radio, or how do I open the fuel cap, or how do I open the boot. Yep, there is usually something, but most of the time the accompanying handbook quickly resolves the problem. And that is where Win 8 failed because the help facility takes you to something youve never heard of before like Charms. But then there must also be other serious problems too because whilst the mates computer was brand new, it required nearly a Gig of updates for Win 8 before it could be updated to 8.1 which was itself just over 3 Gig. Now that is an awful lot of fixes for a brand new OS by any mans standards. Anyway, come next week well find out if we can get Win 8.1 to do even the simplest of tasks. :) Theres a point, does Win 8.1 come with a Mail Handler like Outlook Express/Thunderbird etc.? Any recommendations in this area? |

Almost tones of CS sometimes. ;) |

Here's a suggestion, instead of rubbishing others why not actually give some helpful replies - Like Apple related problems. Theres lots of responses in many forums all over the world that the people would make excellent politicians, dance all around the question but never actually answer it, and the person has to sort out the problem themselves or take it to someone who actually know what they are doing. Many people do it in real life as well. Ask a question and they never really answer it. One guy I know hes not to shy to say to such people " Thats not what I asked". |
