2013-04-21 01:40:00 | Why has no media ever interviewed Max Bradford and pinned him down on his reforms. I saw him on tv yesterday. He blamed Labour's tinkering with his model for the problem, but I can't remember what the tinkering was. The guts of the problem with power prices is that they look at the value of the assets they have, determine the return they want on them and screw the consumers to get it. It has almost zero to do with cost of production. We should have some of the cheapest power in the world. The same problem is why aircraft landing rights are so high at airports. We have been forced to have a way overpaid CEO and board for each power company and airport, all duplicating what each other are doing. I am coming to the view there is a place for Government ownership or control of some core infrastructure assets.

2013-04-21 02:07:00 | I won't comment on whether the CEO salary packages are appropriate to their responsibilities and/or experience. That's a matter for their employers and/or shareholders. However, just like the HUGE $$$ provided to those on benefits every week, it will be a mere drop in the ocean compared to the total overall revenue. Let's look at the numbers bolded in B.M.'s post above. For the purposes of this calculation I will ignore the Transpower figures (that's all about transmission) and the Meridian numbers (because they're incomplete). So for the three retailers left (Contact, Mighty River and Genesis) the total spend on CEO salaries, board payments and other high earning staff (let's assume a $180K average salary, since we don't know for sure what they are - that number may be higher or lower), we end up with a number that looks pretty big: $160,200,000. However if you divide that number among 3 million households (guesstimated), it works out to be around $56 per household. Per Annum. If you add in the Transpower numbers that saving increases to $58 per annum. That's little more than a dollar a week per household. Bearing in mind that SOMEONE has to do those jobs and wouldn't do the job for free, the actual potential savings would be far lower. So however outraged you might like to get over what seem to be big executive salaries, there is little use in getting your tits in a tangle, because they are not the reason for the high price of the commodity they help (arguably) to provide...

2013-04-21 02:34:00 | Not for free, but I am prepared to put my feet on their desks and authorise price increases every few weeks for around half that amount per power co. Somebody else can spew out pathetic reasons why the increases are so necessary, so all the CEOs can be booted and I will handle the lot with an assistant. $100K for the assistant and $2.5M for me. (I will even provide my own dartboard for tricky question resolution.) Pretty good savings there, and we'll only need a single car and chauffeur each. More savings. | R2x1 (4628) | |

And many voters look no further than "What's in it for me?" - an attitude that all political parties are happy to exploit.... |

2013-04-21 08:25:00 | And one must not forget the achievements of another Million Dollar man. "Details of millions of dollars worth of bonuses paid out to staff at debt-ridden Solid Energy have been revealed. The company has paid out $23 million in bonuses over the last two years, and its former Chief Executive Don Elder is in line to get a $250,000 payout. The figures come as the state owned company struggles with its $389 million of debt." (HERE (tvnz.co.nz)) And all this whilst being monitored by the Goverment on our (the Taxpayers) behalf. :groan:
