Guess you will be soon telling us that NOD32 is the be-all and end-all of anti virus programmes :)

Ever thought of becoming a preacher? :(

1359112 2013-11-08 22:29:00 Ahhh yes, but if you ask anyone, at any Tyre Shop, they’ll tell you they are fixing punctures every day, but when was the last time you had a puncture?

I’ll bet most people reading this can’t remember when they last had a puncture, I know I can’t.

?3 in the last 6 months, but to be fair all caused in my drive way where no2 son likes leaving screws out

Ever thought of becoming a preacher? :( I've always said no antivirus is perfect, and thats true, just some are better than others.

Preacher -- no thanks, but if people dont like others making factual comments, thats fine by me, I wont bother helping any more.

Theres been lots of knowable people leave this forum, and its obvious why -figure it out.

One last parting answer for BM & Plod:

I think it was Billy T who came up with a dummy site (totally harmless) that you could go onto to test your AV.

Do any of those sites exist any more? Yes there are, but the majority of AV's these days can figure out its not a real infection/attack, what ever you like to call it.

have you found a cure for cryptolocker? Theres no cure yet, but there are options one can take to stop it.

See ya, got a lot better things to do with my time.

1359114 2013-11-08 23:59:00 Slight addition to my comment:

Time to do some real work now, service call to clean out a malware infested XP computer in Lower Hutt running AVG -- oh thats right, it doesn't really exist does it - Wonder what they are talking about :)

1359116 2013-11-09 02:45:00 There may have been many who have left this forum and I am NOT saying that you are wrong.

It is your arrogance that gets stuck in my craw :(
Zippity (58)
1359117 2013-11-09 03:08:00 If stating FACTS is arrogance then guilty.

I've actually had jobs where some people have said they followed the advise given on this forum, and it made matters worse.

The people I went to see actually pointed out the posts. :groan:

1359118 2013-11-09 04:06:00 I guess some people just can’t handle vigorous debate.

I hope they don’t drive a Ford or Holden. :banana

Anyway, what I think I will need to do on the mates computer is somehow convert the default Win 8 opening screen to one similar to XP.

On that screen there needs to be a Close Icon, a Mail Icon, a Google Icon, a Skype Icon and maybe a couple of others. That’s it.

He has no other programmes nor wants any others.

As a bit of background, he went to sea as a 14yo in 1959 and has sailed the oceans ever since. The nearest he has ever got to computer literacy is punching the information into the odd person.

So if anybody by some chance knows how to dumb this Win 8 down to this level I’d be grateful to know. Oh, it would be prudent not to mention “Charms”. ;)

Suzuki. Now what :p

Turn on boot to desktop, resize all icons on the Start screen to small (similar size to icons), set the background to the same as the desktop background and it's then basically a full-screen Start menu with search. :)

Also turn off hotspots - the two upper corner ones can be disabled.

I'd just boot straight to desktop and turn off charms, detailed here in the first 30 seconds linked: youtu.be

Then I'd install "start is back", or similar. I'd go with start is back, also detailed here (might be worth watching the whole thing it details how to use the program): www.youtube.com (will cost you $3USD though), then I'd set the computer up like any other pc.

Also make sure he's running 8.1 not 8.
