all pure speculation.
Again, explain why av failure rates & quoted MTBF are usually completely unrelated to warranty period.
Warranty is based on what the manufacturer thinks they can get away with: hence all the 1 year warranty . (yes, my speculation)

Real world: When Seagate dropped warranty to 1 year. Please explain using your scenario, as HD's were still just as reliable.
Other HD makers kept warranty as is (3 year at the time). So why would any buy the seagate. Seagate is FORCED by the market
to put the warranty back up to 3 years.
This had nothing to do with how long the drives lasted on average, or when failures occured most frequently.

Please explain 1 year warranty. Using your speculation, the manufacturers must have thought their product was unreliable rubbish. No, its purely market driven, ie what they think they can get away with.

1359781 2013-11-19 03:41:00 I never said it was completely based off that. They obviously factor in market pressure and everything else.

Can you please explain to my why they wouldn't try to save money? by actually knowing the failure rate of their hard drive. Guess what no company is just going to make a product and assume it works.... they test it and they get results from these tests. These results can be used however they please and if they find the harddrive never seems to last more than 3 years then guess what... they are not going to make the warranty higher than 3 years.

How often do you see no brand cheap electronics with good warranty? typically the better the product the better the warranty because they company that makes them can afford to have a better warranty which adds to their sales pitch whereas the no brand cheap company would never make money if they tried to compete.

I'm sorry but you would have to be stupid to think that manufacturers don't look at the results from the tests that they obviously must run and add that as a factor to their warranty.
