1359101 2013-11-08 18:58:00 Sorry BM but your answers have only proven what was posted about stuck in the past.

I don’t believe I’m stuck in the past at all. I just don’t believe in change for the sake of change.

In this case I guess from Microsoft’s point of view, it was all about $’s and I guess your support for the system is in a much smaller way also related to $’s.

However, I must rush off to “Charm School” and learn all about Win 8. :D

Nahhhh, I’ll wait until they ditch Win 8 and release another version. They might be off the weed by then. :)

1st point, actually its hurting the $'s. With less and less people moving away from the fault riddled XP, work decreases as the newer operating systems don't get so easily infected. Ask any person who services PC's whats the main OS that gets work needed, XP, Vista then W7 in that order.

2nd point -- you're missing the bigger picture. I doubt very much the tiles will disappear , looking outside of W8 on a desktop, you have Apple Ipads, iphones, all other i devices, Android phones & tablets, Windows tablets -- Whats the ONE thing they all have in common ?

The answer, touch screens, with tiles of one form or another. Microsoft are simply re aligning their OS so all windows devices can run the same interface.

Re your friends new Computer-- why not remove W8 and put XP on it for them ? Of course you would have problems actually getting it to work as there is a high chance the OS is to old for the hardware and drivers couldn't be obtained-- BUT theres your answer to not liking W8-- Change it.

1359103 2013-11-08 20:30:00 With less and less people moving away from the fault riddled XP Correction to above, that should read more and more people moving away.

Bloody internet went down again before I could edit it. Grrrrrrrrr

The other options if W8 is not really wanted, is to install some form of linux on it, its free, or take it back and get W7 installed, thats close to XP, and W7 is still available. ( keep in mind it will cost)

Well just for the record I have 2 Desktop Computers and a Laptop all running XP SP2 and have had little or no trouble with any of them . All have updates turned off so I don’t get the Hotfix for the Hotfix for the Hotfix for the ……………………

One Desktop I use mainly for testing Hardware and any dubious stuff and it runs online 24/7 without any antivirus . My Main Computer and my Laptop both run Avast (up to date) which has never caught anything or saved the day either .

This has been the situation for years and I’m starting to think this Virus business is somewhat over rated .

Now another mate, not the one updating from ME, upgraded his computer from XP SP2 to SP3 and unfortunately at the same time updated AVG .

Well his computer almost stopped, talk about slow . He threw another gig of RAM at it but little improvement so he uninstalled AVG which helped a bit more but still didn’t get him back to anything like his previous speed . Anyway, some programme he was using apparently required SP3 so that stayed and a year or so on everything is working . Again AVG never saved the day whilst he was using it and it would appear that like me he is none the worse for running without any antivirus .

There is an old saying in Chess that goes “The Threat is worse than the Deed” and I’m starting to think this also applies to these never ending security threats .

At the end of the day I’m happy to take my chances and jump any hurdles when I get to them .

Finally, I take further comfort from the fact that I definitely don’t appear to be alone in my appraisal of Win 8 .

Extract from a couple of sites off Google . There are too many to list .

On Microsoft’s campus today, Ballmer held a ‘rally the troops’ type event where they typically go over the quarterly earnings report and attempt to boost/keep the good vibes flowing within the company .
During his internal address, Ballmer stated that Windows is not selling well enough, which shouldn’t come as a major surprise, as the company has blamed just about everything under the sun for the slower adoption of Windows 8 .

Windows 8 continues to fail

Summary: Microsoft can only hope that its re-invention of Windows 8, Windows 8 . 1 aka Blue, works because currently stats indicate Windows 8 lags behind even Vista's dismal market numbers .

1359105 2013-11-08 21:29:00 This has been the situation for years and I’m starting to think this Virus business is somewhat over rated. REALLY  At least 95% of work is cleaning out infected Computers. Please explain then why there are SO MANY posts here and all over the world relating to infections ?

Just hope you dont get hit with the cryplocker or other type of ransomware. If you do and ask for help, I'll remind you of your comment :)

Many people call an infection a Virus when in fact they are not, its actually Malware, Adware or ransomware, while they are all very similar there are a few differences.

The quote from google -- Hows about posting the articles that say how many people actually disagree with that and do like W8 ? You may be hard pressed to find one because its not that often articles are written about good things, take the Daily news for example on TV, most is doom and gloom, or someone did something wrong, or some scandal someplace. Dont often see good news :)

Many people dont like change, and thats their right, but dont complain when they are forced to and then find it hard because of their beliefs.

But going back to your original question-- Why not get XP or W7 put on your friends computer ?

1359106 2013-11-08 21:30:00 When I first started using win 8 I also installed Classic Shell, also the similar program Start 8 on another machine. After a while I removed them as I realised I was just 'living in the world of dying OS's'.
It wasn't a big deal as I had learned Win 8 pretty well by then. Along came Windows 8.1. Now I personally wouldn't have any other OS on my personal computer and I have used everything from Dos 6.2 to Linux over the last 25 odd yrs.
For a worksite server my choice would probably MS Server 2012 - but totally dif scenario.
I have to totally agree with Wainuitech here:

Windows 8 is not crap when a person learns how to use it. As I mentioned before its only crap to those who those who refuse to learn something new. A high % of people who think its crap have never used it, or are so bloody thick that they listen to others who have never bothered to use or learn it. Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa follow the sheep or stick ya head in the sand and hope it goes away -- Not gonna happen

Don't think there is anything that can unencrypt it

A regular image of your system is your best defence along with a good AV and a full time anti-malware program

Ahhh yes, but if you ask anyone, at any Tyre Shop, they’ll tell you they are fixing punctures every day, but when was the last time you had a puncture?

I’ll bet most people reading this can’t remember when they last had a puncture, I know I can’t.

They do happen, but dare I suggest they’re a bit like all the Computer Security Scares.

Actually, whilst typing this, the mind flicked back many years and I recall once previously “Complaining” that my Anti Virus hadn’t caught anything. I think it was Billy T who came up with a dummy site (totally harmless) that you could go onto to test your AV.

Do any of those sites exist any more?

Returning to the mates computer, a decision will be made next week as to what steps to take. In the meantime it can stay stock standard until his fibre is connected and the installation guys hook him up.

Wasn’t a bad deal, totally free fibre up to the house and installation of free modem and set-up.

Wonder if they are closing down their dial-up service?
