1338692 2013-04-29 21:25:00 The biggest cities in the world - the rail network is the bloodline for every day people. The rail service may cost more than bus for the consumer.

But in terms of NZ it depends on how much they are willing to spend on it. Auckland only has 1M people and growing, doesn't Melbourne use the tram line instead of overlanders/underground subways. Hiroshima for eg .. uses the trams.

Melbourne has a mix of both Trams and heavy rail with an under ground city loop..

1338694 2013-04-29 22:23:00 On the news the last few days, Mayor Len wants to start taxing road users to pay for the new Train network.
OK, hands up all those happy to have increased petrol prices, road tolls & rates rises to pay for all this. These will need to be substantial to cover it.
All for a 5% reduction in road congestion.

Some one has to pay for all this(ie you & me), that seems to continuously get left out of these arguments

Problem is the government won't pay for major projects that they have the spare money for, so Auckland has to get money elsewhere (higher PT fares, regional fuel tax, congestion charges etc.) - and the government is also trying to block Auckland from getting those extra funds.

Go for it but i cant see why i should have to pay for auckland roads. If i visited i would be happy to pay while i used them like Tauranga. Then come back to my idyllic lifestyle in NP and have to wait 20 seconds for the lights to change.
No one wants to put the money into the infrastructure but everyone wants it to be better, the system is there they just need to grow some ballz and implement it.

1338699 2013-04-30 08:51:00 I see on the news that Maurice "gay" Williamson is thinking of tossing his hat in the arena for the next mayoral race. That way the Gov will have their man in office to do their bidding. paulw (1826)
