1338682 2013-04-29 00:10:00 They had it all sorted in 1965 HERE (transportblog.co.nz) and then the Procrastinators got involved. :annoyed:

But you’ve got to give credit where credit is due, because 48 years later the Procrastinators are still procrastinating. :clap

Just as well the Harbour Bridge was built before we became a nation of handwringers.

1338683 2013-04-29 00:38:00 Really?

How do they do that?

By levitation?

If an Express (or any other unit) wants to pass a local train, it can only do so if the train being passed is switched to a siding until the Express has gone by. That can entail a lengthy wait for the Express to pass because sidings are not a regular feature of our lines, except at major stations.

Timing safety margins are vital, as experience in India has amply demonstrated. We only recently expanded our local network to two lines, and once you go south of Hamilton it is single-line all the way to Paraparaumu (I think) then two lines again into Wellington.

Cheers

For a start, we no longer have express trains.

Trains pass each other with our brand-new bi-directional signalling, where trains can run in either direction on either track (with Britomart using the system pretty much every day).

Between Hamilton and Paraparaumu is mostly single track, with frequent passing loops (basically short sections of double track) allowing trains to cross.

The train sorta smelled and felt uncomfortable to ride on.

That's Australian engineering for you

1338684 2013-04-29 01:36:00 Just how anyone can justify the huge costs of commuter trains is beyond me

Most people dont live near a train track/station
Most people dont work near a train track/station
Trains are anything but cheap to buy
Train tracks are anything but cheap to make

Bus's use existing roads, so they are far cheaper in every way.
hands up who is willing to pay for the proposed commuter train system THAT WILL BANKRUPT AK , how much extra tax will you pay before it is too much ??
yes that will mean new road charges, new road tolls on existing roads, new parking taxes, new petrol taxes, increased rates.

Public transport allways will run at a loss, that loss is paid for by you & me. Just how much of a loss is something most dont want to consider
For me to get to work , I'd need to catch 3 buses. In winter I would get to work soaking wet. Thats the problem, Ak is too spread out for public transport to really work.
The car is always a better option for most AK'ers . Just the way it is.

The extra rail lines proposed will help with coverage; for now, feeder buses increase coverage of existing stations.

Trains may be more expensive, but they also have a far higher capacity and speed than buses, and most people prefer the comfort of a train over a bus.

The car is not a viable option for me as it is far more expensive than a monthly pass for trains, and besides I like the exercise at each end of the journey (I can drive to the station if it rains).

Name one city in the world that has profitable public transport. Of course it will require a subsidy, even in cities which have high rates of public transport usage (e.g. Tokyo).

1338686 2013-04-29 01:59:00 This is the same Rodney Hyde who told everyone that the Super Shity would be best and would save heaps of money. Classic fail on that point. It's cost us all way more. Now he wants buses over trains. What happens when someone in the middle east farts and the oil stops?? The buses will stop as well but the electric trans will keep going..

I way prefer to ride on rail train / tram than a bus driven by an stock card driver on the minimum wage.. Actually it's insulting to stock car drivers who are way more skillful that the AKL bus drivers.

1338690 2013-04-29 09:21:00 Cancel the national cycleway and there can be trains and tracks enough to deliver the mail to each house. Don'cha love statistics? R2x1 (4628)
1338691 2013-04-29 09:34:00 The biggest cities in the world - the rail network is the bloodline for every day people. The rail service may cost more than bus for the consumer.

But in terms of NZ it depends on how much they are willing to spend on it. Auckland only has 1M people and growing, doesn't Melbourne use the tram line instead of overlanders/underground subways. Hiroshima for eg .. uses the trams.
