1338499 2013-04-27 23:38:00 My 2 cents worth. Yeah a small amount injection isn't gonna generate much. Kiwibank savings account won't give you interest if you have less than $3k. If one looks at Contact Energy the dividend for the last few years are about 12c per share at the time they were floated at $3 a share so that's a 4% return per dollar invested and the $3 share is similar to what Might River is expecting. Similar to savings accounts. But the share price has apprec. by about 80% after the many years. A thousand dollar might get $40 of dividend yeah not exactly earth shattering is it. And these aren't your volatile stocks short term stocks. It's also a bit conflicting, if we get price rises should we be happy or .... Nomad (952)
1338500 2013-04-28 09:09:00 FWIW I bought 800 Contact shares when they were listed. The price was $3.10. Today 13 years later the price is $5.35. I'd have been much better to have put $800 on term deposit. Let me hasten to add that I'm not complaining, just a bit bemused.

Yes there have been dividends over the years but some wise person has calculated that Contact's real return over 13 years has been -2.2%.

MRP should be a sound investment with probably a rise in price upon listing but it is expensive compared to Contact and Trustpower. Longer term its price is likely to be flat.

1338501 2013-04-28 20:04:00 I had signed up for MRP shares, but am now finding I have cold feet.

There's talk that the value / returns have been artificially inflated to make it look better.
Add to that the fact that a plain old bank deposit can earn the same money, and interest rates are tipped to go back to 9%, making cash in the bank better still.
Add in the potential for Labour to further put the knife in.
Add in the changing environment, which may lead to more Nth Island droughts like we had this year.
MRP's hydro generation is a series of plants all along the same river, so there's a lack of physical diversity in terms of their water supply during drought. If one station on the river runs dry, then they all run dry, and MRP is shafted.

On the positive side, they are North Island based, which does make them a pretty critical supplier when most of the other generators are reliant on moving energy across Cook St, which becomes the Archilles Heel of the other generators. If the Cook St link goes down, or hits max capacity, then MRP can name any price they want.

I'm investing elsewhere for now.

1338502 2013-04-28 22:29:00 Just playing with my spreadsheet. Assuming 5% interest rate return and no tax like a savings or term investment account. So like a 7% published interest rate. $3.10 becomes $5.12 after 13yrs with that unchanged interest rate - that is intereste compounded or reinvested after every year of that term investment. The Contact shares I read on Yahoo Finance was $5.85 maybe $5.35 maybe due to wholesale rate reported dunno or maybe diff slightly date. Contact also had dividend returns. But I had a look at its historical share prices, within a year or two after it was floated the $3.10 did drop down to $1.50 again these are Yahoo's figures so it might be the foreign market dunno with slightly diff figures and it climbed to $5.00 in 2006 and till about now it reported $5.85. Maybe with shares it requires some intervention of when you want to sell them than just hogg them for a series of years ... Nomad (952)
1338503 2013-04-28 22:31:00 I see the government will still own 51% of MRP.

1338507 2013-04-30 05:22:00 Registered on line for $k20 placed for $k3 today, wonder if we will be asked what happened to the other $k17.

As people seem to be in a negative mood, we may be able to average down in future.

Lurking.
