1337415 2013-04-19 02:35:00 **** 600 buckaroos a month.... mine is $140 in my V8, i go through about 1 tank a month if i dont drive out of town. But i do live about 3 minutes from work.
So my power bill is about the same as my petrol on average.
Actually at this cost my insurance is more than my energy costs, and my rates are too

1337416 2013-04-19 03:06:00 Yeah our rates are ~$1800 a month I think? They just went down my wife said...

I drive 30 mins a day each way from West Auckland to the Shore. Add a small amount of driving around in my own time after work etc and it's easy to churn through that much :(

1337417 2013-04-19 03:27:00 My petrol bill is $20 a month as I cycle to work most days 10km each way gary67 (56)
1337418 2013-04-19 03:31:00 Anyways, Power is expensive, no doubt about it, but what's much more expensive is petrol.

I spend almost $100 a week in gas, my wife spends around $50 a week... That's $600 a month! Our power bill? $160 maybe?!

I'd prefer they focused on the *real* "expensive stuff" rather than the stuff that's an easy sell :p

Petrol is dear, and of course its one thig we cant cut back on much, we have to get to work and go shoppign etc.

Ask any European though and its dearer there.

Its dear here because of very high taxes.

So I can't imagine David Shearer cutting taxes on petrol anytime soon.

And goverments always seem to "be adding just 2 or 3 cents a litre to pay for this road or this rail, or that road, or safety this or safety that"

1337419 2013-04-19 03:45:00 Rather than trying to manipulate the wrong end of things as these idiot politicians are proposing here, a much better strategy would be to create an environment where well paying jobs could be created, then people would be able to better afford power, rates, fuel etc - or whatever else they wanted to spend their *own* hard-earned money on.

But of course that kind of thinking is difficult in the extreme for politicians, especially socialist leaning ones, who just want to look after everyone by dragging everyone down to the same level.

Wish I could. It's roughly 4x the time for me to get to work if I Cycle. I'd rather work an extra hour to pay the petrol and enjoy the additional 2 hours free each day...

Just trying to convince SWMBO to let me get a motorbike so I can have the best of both worlds :D

Well said, if you are in a well paying job or single and working, then the power bill is probably easily payable.

If you are a little old lady renting a place in Dunedin on a pension, then the power bill is probably hard to pay in winter.

1337424 2013-04-19 07:12:00 Just to look at the problem in reverse, how is the cost of Solar Panel based systems going these days? If you were able to pay one off at the same rate as your current power bill you would be immune from futher price hikes. PPp (9511)
