| 1338566 | 2013-04-28 04:03:00 | Just out of interest, I was reading up on the new Samsung GS4 and how there was an engineer and a university student who signed up for a 2yr contract with a telco and got the phone for free while paying $119 per month. Do people do that really  Makes me like a hermit. When I was away from home I took up a $30 plan for 200 offpeak minutes. If I am lying outside today and without a landline the cheapest contract plans would be more than enough. Get home and writ them an email. But then that's just the $119 mobile plan, there's also the home internet plan as well. | Nomad (952) | ||

It's probably like broadband plans. Where the ISP gives you a free modem (which is usually crap), when you join one. Looks like telecom have a similar pricing / $119 for 2 yrs and 2 GB free (store.telecom.co.nz) lol whoopie doo. It sounds good but then if you break the 1 or 2 yr contract, you pay 200 or more for breaking it I would rather save up then pay for it / who would spend 2 and a 1/2 g for a smartphone that costs $1149 |

I bought my Galaxy S3 from JBhifi but I'll probably buy my Galaxy S4 in HK since its around $900ish there. I checked the Galaxy S4 at telecom, queen street yesterday and looked pretty awesome. haha The eye scrolling thing was fun, You look down and the phone actually scrolls down for you |

But then that's just the $119 mobile plan, there's also the home internet plan as well. I went the same way. I got an iPhone 32gb for 150$ on a 2 year 80$ contract at Telecom. It was a great deal at the time, before these 19$ deals started. Doing the calculations, 80*24+150= 2070$ over two years. Price of iPhone at the time = 1199, IIRC could have been a bit less. Which means I pay $929 for my phone plan. For a gig of data, 300 mins and text for 39$ a month - which was pretty good back then. After the first year, I changed over to the 40$ plan. So, as it stands: 150 + (80* 12) + (40*12) = 1590. So at the end of the day, I paid an extra 400$ over the price of an iPhone. Which comes down to 16.80 a month over two years for voice, data and text. Beat that. |

Anyway most teenagers will do without food just fine, texting is a different matter entirely. It's the same as all the damn interest free schemes all the shops offer anyway. If you crunch the numbers it's not that expensive, at the end of the day. |
