2013-04-18 11:54:00 | www.stuff.co.nz (www.stuff.co.nz)As usual, Labour and the Greens more than happy to spend our hard-earned money. Unfortunately, most voters (especially the more leftish-leaning ones, to which this carrot is designed to appeal) are pretty clueless and don't realise that a government has no money of it's own, just what is extorted (OK, an emotive term :) ) from hard working New Zealanders....

And the alternative is better? Making us pay for it twice. I'm not saying it will work and I doubt it will but neither is selling off part of the companies either this proposed scheme is just as crackpot as the governments |

2013-04-18 20:57:00 | It is called economic stabotage. Just the threat has already hit the value of all the energy industry. Labor/Greens have also given no indication as to how they intend to replace the dividend that will no longer be received by the government. The 5K new jobs Shearer reckons will be created will all be in the new government department he said will be set up to buy and onsell power. Bet you can't guess who will pay for that lot. It is just a political ploy, everyone would like cheaper electricity, get it but there would be no new power generating capacity ever built unless directly by the government..Bet you can't guess who would pay for that either.

2013-04-18 21:10:00 | In theory it sounds nice but Labor had 9 years to do something about power pricing and sat on their hands. Now they are being elbowed by the Greens to say this. So much for MMP when the only way to get power is make deals with the devil just like National has done with the Maori Party.. | paulw (1826) | |

2013-04-18 22:16:00 | I heard David Shearer on the radio last night - I have never heard such a bumbler. He obviously does not understand the policy. All he kept saying is that power is too dear. Some people are saying that the OECD says our power prices are in the lower half !

2013-04-19 02:09:00 | 50 watt bulb at the end of a loooong tunnel or a way to a brighter future? Is Labour's Power Option a good idea? It's already frightened the share market, the possibility of cheaper power sounds great to me. I well remember the rubbish promised by the then government that bigger is better and power prices would go down if they split the power boards up. What a load of 'Horse Hockey'. home.nzcity.co.nz

2013-04-19 02:25:00 | Just merged your thread ruup with this one. Anyways, Power is expensive, no doubt about it, but what's much more expensive is petrol. I spend almost $100 a week in gas, my wife spends around $50 a week... That's $600 a month! Our power bill? $160 maybe?! I'd prefer they focused on the *real* "expensive stuff" rather than the stuff that's an easy sell :p
