2004-04-06 01:36:00 | Hi. I've recently gone onto Orcon's 256k 'surf' plan, and have been allocated a fixed IP. I'd feel slightly more secure with a dynamic one, and would prefer the extra bit of anonymity associated with it. But Orcon advise that it's due to Telecom's allocation of addresses. This wasn't the case when I used Xtra for my full speed Jetstream. So what's the situation for 'Surf' plan users with other ISP's?

2004-04-06 01:57:00 | being a business user we have to pay $44 per month +GST for each of our static IP addresses...think yourself lucky! :) | falvrez (390) | |
2004-04-06 02:03:00 | Greg> I wanted one on my JetStream Starter plan and was prepared to pay extra for it. Is it orcon only that do this or does every ISP?

2004-04-06 02:17:00 | I'm on dynamic IP with Paradise Jetstart adsl 128k. Not 256k surf but I don't see why the policy would be any different Cheers Murray P

Perhaps it's a tie-in to how our useage is metered... it's now via Telecom for me instead of via Orcon as it was when I was on 128 |

2004-04-06 02:42:00 | It is not possible to have a fixed IP address with Jetstart Most ISP's who supply Jetstream use a fixed IP some like Xtra don't for some reason.

2004-04-06 03:39:00 | Yeah, its set by Telecom, not the ISPs about Static IP's on JS Starter. I'll look into this tonight, it'd be a great excuse to go to Orcon :D Have you tried ringing Orcon Greg? Chill.

2004-04-06 06:11:00 | I'm on Jetstream Surf 256k (1gb plan), and have a dynamic IP - my ISP is Xtra, and have found their service to be quite good (had to ring their helpline due to telecom not connecting us at the exchange when our new plan had already come into action, and the person at the Xtra end was very helpful.) | somebody (208) | |
