2004-04-05 21:19:00 | After reinstalling XP and removing a bad stick of ram I reinstalled all my software and it works OK, EXCEPT for Norton A/V 2003. It installs OK and does virus scans and e-mail checks but it does not download new updates either automaticly or manualy. I regularly get a pop up card ERROR 504. (Norton can not guarantee the integraty..etc) I have reinstalled it several times always with the same result. When deleting it I do it the recommended way including removing items from registry. When installing I notice that when I click on finish the program does not go to the registration page but jumps to the page with the installation date and expirey date. I have read and tried all on the help page at the Symantec web site. I had decided something was wrong with my CD and I would buy a new copy of NAV 2004. But first I tried NAV 2002 . AND it did exactly the same thing. So the problem is not with Norton but with my comp. What could be stopping Norton from installing properly? I do not have a firewall or search and destroy or adaware installed. Jack

2004-04-05 21:56:00 | JJJJJ I don't know how to help you, and if others cannot I suggest you phone Symantec Customer Services. Try 0800 445 304, and if that does not work 0800 174 089. Hopefully someone will be able to advise you. Oxie (Lyn)

2004-04-05 22:32:00 | Be pleased to see how you resolve this. I had similar problems some months ago after upgrading OS from 98SE to XP PRO. I ended up shifting my allegiance to AVG, liked what I saw on the free version and bought in to them. Not pushing AVG here, just stating that I really could not resolve the problem with Norton 2003. | Scouse (83) | |
2004-04-05 22:47:00 | Hey JJJJJ, Did you do a format? You may have to look on Symantec's website for a manual update to fix this problem, because I think there is an update to fix the liveupdate and without it, you can't update using liveupdate. Have a look for it, I'm not sure how I stumbled on it so I don't know the location. Maybe read the FAQs on the site. Noel Nosivad

Did you do things in the exact order above Jack, I mean did you reinstall XP then remove the faulty RAM? If so your installation may still have residual corruption from the faulty RAM and if that is the case your best bet is to start again from scratch with a reformat and reinstall of XP. Then buy a copy of Norton Ghost make an image of your fresh installation, and never have to reformat again, not ever, really, truly. My W98 box has never been reformatted or had an OS reinstall since the first Ghost Personal Edition was released back around the turn of the century. It was so long ago I've forgotten. | 227475 | 2004-04-06 00:31:00 | IIRC, did not Nortons add a liitle something to your hard drive that could not be got rid of with a format? Something to do with preventing multiple installations and upgrades past their expirey. I'm not discounting something else but, if you up to date with your subscription, as above, contact Norton's for a fix. Cheers Murray P |

2004-04-07 02:59:00 | If anyone's interested I have got it fixed. Simple realy. Deleted everything on my H/D and started over again. NAV installed without a problem and my subscription started again from yesterday. I'm pretty sure all my problems were caused by a faulty ram stick. So I installed everything with only 512 megs. Just finished putting a replacement stick in now so back to 1024 megs and realy flying. Jack :-) :-) :-)

2004-04-07 03:20:00 | Life's like that, Jack. I get punctures of my bicycle tyres. I never get one. I get a sequence of punctures, then I have none for months. Once the fickle finger of fate has found you, it is reluctant to move away to some other victim. ;-)
