227456 2004-04-05 20:42:00 I have two Pc's networked which is good fun for all sorts of reasons.
But I often have the problem that the documents that I'm after are on the pc other p.c which might be turned of.
I wish I had a shared hard drive that didn't need the other pc on at the time.
I use one pc in the morning & the other in the evening.
somthing like a cf card that could be accessed from either pc without requiring the other to be on.
Cheers Ron

227458 2004-04-06 01:00:00 I have that problem every now and then and it's a bit of a pain.

What I have thought about doing is buying a hard drive for the shared data and fitting a removable HDD caddy into each computer so that the hard drive can be transferred from one computer to the other when required. It wouldn't matter what computer the HDD was in then because if both PCs were running the data can be accessed via the network.

The only drawback is the hassle of remembering to transfer the drive prior to switching on the PC you plan to use. And the hassle of transferring it too, I suppose.

That's just an idea anyway - so far it hasn't been bad enough for me to take that option.

227459 2004-04-06 02:35:00 Well, you can get the 1GB CF hard disks which can be put in a USB card reader, or PCMCIA adapter, which is hot-swappable .

I think I've seen a USB hard drive enclosure mentioned somewhere .

Or you could use a digital camera if you don't mind using it as an expensive hot-swappable hard disk . :D

227460 2004-04-07 03:42:00 P.S. I've just seen (on the site with that nice laptop someone might buy) a disk drive case with USB interface. About $100 or so. Put a drive in one of those and you've got a hot-swappable disk. Graham L (2)
227461 2004-04-07 03:57:00 some external drives have 2 interfaces (usb and firewire). so maybe you could connect it to both computers using different interfaces? Megaman (344)
227462 2004-04-07 05:01:00 One physical disk (i.e. not network drive) mounted by two operating systems at one time ?? I would doubt it. JohnD (509)
227463 2004-04-07 05:04:00 You certainly could connect such a unit to two computers. The results would not be useful. ;-) (It would probably work only with the first-connected interface, so the resiults misgh not be disastrous).) Graham L (2)
