227393 2004-04-05 10:53:00 I recently purchased a notebook with 16" UXGA (1600 x 1200) display. When I reduce resolution I lose display quality (poor image and text), unlike a CRT or desktop LCD where display quality does not seem to be affected by resolution reduction. Help! H00TERS (5488)
227394 2004-04-05 12:00:00 On LCD displays, 1 pixel = 1 screen pixel. Exactly.
They are digitally mapped, so if you reduce the resolution you get 1 pixel = "1 and a bit" pixels.

An LCD pixel is either on or off, not half of it on and half off, so any use at a resolution other than the native screen resolution is going to be disappointing. Its not scalable.

On a CRT, one pixel is "about as big as the beam can quickly turn on and off" which can be any size. Its analogue, not digital. Its scalable.

The resolution of an LCD at native is quite sharp.
You need to be a bit careful that the laptop screen is not too high in native resolution when you choose one, or things are a bit small.

In my view, 1024 x 768 is about optimum for a laptop screen.

227395 2004-04-05 22:31:00 i thought that all lcds were made for 1024x768 res at higher or lower res they preform worse, as the reasoning godfather stated Budda (2736)
227396 2004-04-05 22:46:00 My VAIO (GRV7P, P4 2.6, 512DDR RAM, Raidon 64mb, DVDRW etc..)
has the same native resolution (16" 1600 x 1200).

I've had the same trouble messing with the graphics setting. The way that I've gotten around the problem of the screen being too small is to change the following:

Use Large Fonts (Under Video Settings?)
up the IE Font Size (View: Text Size)
Change the Quick launch bar to show large icons

My settings now are great, there's a heap of desktop real-estate, I can have two programs open side by side (IE and Excel for example).

I've tried to mess round with clear-path? fonts, but it didn't make any difference.

Hope these suggestions help!

227397 2004-04-06 01:04:00 Godfather, that's a great explanation you have given (you should have been a teacher!) .

I am wondering about Hooters' claim that his desktop LCD is not as affected by a resolution reduction - are desktop LCDs a bit more flexible/forgiving with that sort of thing?

227398 2004-04-06 11:29:00 Thanks all to who replied - good explanation godfather!

I have tried messing around with font sizes etc which unfortunately don't work with the VB programs I deal with .

Re: Susan B - my desktop LCD has the same resolution issues when connected with the VAIO GRT30P . The same LCD unit does not seem to be affected in the same way by changes to the resolution when connected with other desktop models!!
