227693 2004-04-12 21:46:00 As a Pc and mac user there is only ONE o/s worth it's salt. PANTHER. This looks and runs like a computer should in the year 2004. XP and ANY microsoft product looks like (and runs like) it's stuck in the late 80's. Yeah right, LONGHORN... remember that bumper sticker windows 2000 = mac 89... the 11 year gap STILL remains...get with the program gates...
hehehe...

227695 2004-04-12 23:00:00 >What Dell, HP etc are doing is beside the point here I think.
>You can go to Dick Smiths and buy a computer with no O/S can you not?
>You can then install the O/S of your choice can you not?

>You could also go buy a case and all the other parts and build your own >computer can you not?

What newbie would do that I ask?

Companies need to distrubute linux on their pc's so that newbies get a step up... therefore they only know linux, therefore they get good at linux... therefore theres one less mind for microsoft/satan to wash...

[in game voice]You have saved 1 newbie[/igv]

227698 2004-04-14 15:52:00 The thing linux needs to do is improve its "opium user named" programs and the help things.

E.G. gnome or konqueror. - Average newbie is going to think WTF do these programs do!! "Argh ARGH, I just want to surf the internet! Argh ARGH Which program do I choose!"

Round n round in circles they go. Name the bloody program by what its use is! Not what you were dreaming about while smoking Opium!

Also one program that does all is plenty. Too much choice is not good, no-one knows what they are doing. You lose all control.

Point 2: Notice how in windows, you can hover over a function and it will pop up a description of what that tick-box or whatever does. Basically explains what it does quickly without the user having to read through the linux 200 page gibberish console command manual for the program.

To make matters worse in linux, the options are labelled like xOpenNewWindow etc, with no good detail about what they do.

Point 3: Time and profitability is wasted by having to resort to console commands to get any real work done.

E.g to install say openoffice. First compile your kernel:
xzcx7680xc86xxc6xz6vxc766vxc776vxc76vxc67vxc - followed by 20lines of gibberish and 2hours later...
Now install open office:
32479dsa7f97dsa7fd9780dsads9sf6da69fd60=sfs - 20lines of code and more gibberish.
Now run office:
6xc867v9x689x8sa888a: dependency errors.
Install 5763246 bla bla blah
253792858543265468654325642574327dsafds7f9 - more gibberish lines of code.
Now run office:
329473216ds687f6a06643206x: kernal error. Recompile kernal.

Round n round in circles they go again. You go through a similar BS process for every program you install. Point and click dammit! Nobody needs to know all that crap to install a program.

Point 4: No good compatibility with programs already on the market for windows. Wine/X, blah! Runs 2% of the programs. The programs have a limited functionality of what they can do as well. Missing half the features.

Point 5: People run their computer for the programs, not the OS and not to learn how to do crazy stuff thats not even necessary like recompiling your kernal etc just to install something.

227699 2004-04-14 19:57:00 Agreed Orion -

My first foray in the Linux world was with Mandrake. It was fun but as you say very confusing, needless to say I rarely went back.

Along came Xandros and so far it is going to be the (in my brief experience) a winner. I have got all the basics set up without a hitch and infinitely better and easier than my experience with windows XP (3years) and ME (1year, say no more).

I feel that XP is still the better of the 2, mainly because it will play my games and setup philosophy is still very basic. I still think in XP / MS so for me using this OS is more 2nd nature and to it's credit has been a very reliable and stable platform. My kids use it without any problem so it truly is an OS for the family.

I definitly can see a lot of potential in Xandros and look forward to future versions that should make this more user friendly distro with the knowledge that the geek community are more than welcome to 'open the hood' at any time.

You are in the wrong thread, Orion. You should be arguing all those points in this thread (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz). ;-)
