Well I am running WinXP Pro 2002 with Service Pack 2 Version 2096.

Hasn't fallen over for me yet.

I might add that while I try beta software quite often I have not needed to reformat and reload this O/S since I can't remember.

The best operating system is the one YOU can use is it not? This is based on things like what hardware you have and whether there are drivers for on board hardware plus PCI or ISA cards and Printers and scanners etc etc et al

I think I have said this before.
First find out what PROGRAMS you want to run then work out what O/S will run those programs.

Try to get MS Flight Simulator to run on a Mac for example without running a Win Emulator.

I use WinXP Pro only because it works for me in being able to network via the internet and help customers.

I'm inclined to agree with you here. The fact remains though, in my opinion, that most schools teach things like Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc.
All part of MSOffice. If I was really a serious Gamer I may consider things like a PlayStation or an XBox.

I could dual boot this system into Linux and have done this before.

Linux is not going to do what I want.

I still say this! Ther best O/S is the one that works for you.

:-)

227683 2004-04-12 11:50:00 No "really serious" gamer would take a console over a gaming PC. metla (154)

What Dell, HP etc are doing is beside the point here I think.
You can go to Dick Smiths and buy a computer with no O/S can you not?
You can then install the O/S of your choice can you not?

You could also go buy a case and all the other parts and build your own computer can you not?

Why would HP or Dell even think about Linux ( any version ) when over 90% of people in the whole world use an MS O/S? I have nothing against Linux, Unix, BeOS, CPM, MSDOS 3.3, DRDOS etc etc. My O/S of choice is WinXP pro as it works for me.

Now this does not mean you are wrong. We still have a Flat Earth Society though do we not?

You may well be right. I am not a "really serious" gamer though.
Just offered for consideration. My comment was to get people to think about what they want to do.

227686 2004-04-12 12:18:00 hi guys,
just to put my spoke in here, with the little i do know is . . . . . .

use the OS that best suits what you want to do, for me that is XP, for learners this is good, a wizard that does almost everything you need on it . . . . .

i think that what i would look at next time OS wise,
is the same XP OS, and a bit more oomph power wise, speed etc, Comp wise, im not into gaming and last of all a flat screen for beetle, er i mean others with a rim of rubber round the screen so that when i bash my head against it in frustration no beetles, i mean er other people will get hurt while useing the computer .

and no one will get hurt in the making of this post . . . . . . :p

best idea is to find other people with these OS's on there comp's and see them in action or use them before buying if pos .

2 cents of useless info from the beetle today, from someone who knows not enough about these bloody machines, who is terrorised for life trying to sort out the one lemon she has, to the detriment of all on pf1 . . . . :p

have a good one .

:D

I fail to see your point here.

Shortcuts can be made using Win2000 or WinXP

Folders or Directories as I'd rather call them can be put on another partition on either Win2000 and you can in fact call them what you like.

> Phoey to that... I'd rather have the

Well have your resources then. For that then try running any version of Linux. This will use less resources than any Windows based computer.

Maybe I will go back to driving a Model T Ford car as well. This will use less petrol tham my current car. Why stop there??? Go back to horse and cart? That way it will only take me about three weeks to get from my place to Wellington. I would only do this so I can get to see the Government and ask them to get me a six week weekend so I can travel down and back and not work.

227688 2004-04-12 12:34:00 While Dell still are an Intel house that may change as Intel are way behind on the 64 bit front, HP are now selling Linux boxes. The wintel cartel is now finished. mikebartnz (21)

Why would I.

227690 2004-04-12 12:42:00 Works fine if you only want to flash a BIOS DRDOS does. :-)

Can I run OpenOffice on that?

Can I run MSOffice 2003 on that?

Sarcasm mode off!!!!
