2004-04-06 12:23:00 | >(although it still has to be done manually at least half the time) It is so much harder setting up a network in XP than 9x. It could take me about a min but with the wizards getting in the way it takes ten times as long.

2004-04-06 12:29:00 | Yeah, the networking wizards are a bit of a mixed blessing(curse). Excellent for someone who has no idea how to go about it,provided it actually works. and a major pain for everyone else. Still, when people ask me how to network, rather then spend an hour telling them info what they won't remember or understand i tell em to run the wizard and if it doesn't work get back to me(and bring a cheque book) :D

2004-04-06 12:29:00 | Murray> Looked into Ark Linux? See here for info on your games: www.transgaming.com www.transgaming.com Hamstar> I didnt really do research into that statement about HP/Dell.. I just decided it sounded like somthing good to convince people.... ;-) Actually, on a slightly more Local scale, DSE have been advertising a lot of hardware as "Linux compatible". Take my TV-Tuner card for example :-) Still, I could only find an aging version of Corel Linux last time I was in westcity :p ..So, it looks as though HP and MS arent too close for HP to support Linux. HP were the ones who stood up and said they'd back their customers who use Linux against SCO when this whole SCO vs Linux tale began. Chill.

2004-04-06 12:38:00 | Wow chill, you say they can run UT2004 in linux native? How do you install it exactly? Very complex? Think I might have a crack at it myself ;)

2004-04-06 12:43:00 | Bah, its dead easy! UT2K3 works too.. Ive got it running fine on my Desktop PC :-) The origional UT can be patched easily to made to work under Linux :-) The installer is the .sh file on the 3rd CD-Rom drive. You may run into issues mounting/unmounting the CD-Rom, so if it does, copy the .sh file somewhere onto your HDD and run that. sh installername.sh And that's it, native UT on Linux :-) ..Now to just find that powerpoint presentation where nVidia said there was a performance increase in some cases in Linux over Doze (and everything else was equal)..... Chill.

2004-04-07 03:52:00 | Well, all this advice has me more undecided than I was. I'm running a pretty good machine, Intel 2.4, 512 mb DDR, a SOYO SY-P4186PE Plus Dragon 2 board, Maxtor 80 gb HD, and just ordered an ATI 9600 card. Seriosly concidering another 512 mb of memmory. I'm no expert. The board came with a SATA cable, but I don't know what SATA is. It also has a 10/100 LAN onboard, and I don't know what that is either. It has "DUAL DDR 400" , which I guess is good, whatever that is. I've tried to read up on this stuff but most books I get talk right over my head. I apreciate all the help I've gotten from you guy's at F1 . If you ever need help repairing something that runs on gas or diesel fuel, don't hesitate... | WILLWILLWILLWILL (236) | |
2004-04-07 04:08:00 | sata: serial ata cable for hard drives. it's a lot faster than pata (parallel ata) and the cables are thin, so airflow is better 10/100 lan: if you want to play games over a network, you need at least 100mb lan. lan is used for networking dual ddr 400: RAM speed. ddr means double data rate, and it runs at 400mhz. its a good ram speed. @hamstar, build a bridge, and get over it. xp pro has a lot more features than 2000, its better for playing games, and its a lot faster.

2004-04-07 04:42:00 | If your hardware allows, go for XP. It's far more superior than 98SE. Check for hardware compatibility before installing XP. | bk T (215) | |
