227631 2004-04-06 05:43:00 Well, I would say XP as well.

You can turn off all the themes, and just have it look like win 2000 if you want, and even stop the themes thing from starting up too.

227632 2004-04-06 07:02:00 Well being a win 2k (& new linux user) I'd have to say I have had no serious complaints except for the patching and susequent un asked for add on's. But I must say if you want the best from the latest and greatest games XP home is probably the way to go.

On the other hand I believe that you should install Linux then pester the heck out of the game developers/distributers for the next 5 years to persuade them to port them to Linux X-( <------ me holding my breathe. me giving up & letting it go -----> :O

227633 2004-04-06 07:19:00 Okay, lets think rationally here...

If your OS takes up less RAM, your game has more room to run.
If your OS takes up more RAM, your game runs crappy.

Now lets have a think here... what uses more RAM? XP or 2000?

227634 2004-04-06 10:39:00 either way you need a comp that suits the hardware.

If your using xp then run it on a comp that suits it.

if your stuck in the past and want good performance with less ram then use win98.

w2000 was never designed as a gaming platform, and everything it does winxp can do better, whether you have the bells and whistles running or not.

Either system you choose will not use the RAM you have to its proper capabilities before using the SWAP file, so you've got a performance hit there regardless.
OTOH, when you have 512MB Ram, if the OS takes up another 20-30MB, then you're not really going to give a stuff are you?!
I didnt..... ...What I did care about was the fact that only 120MB Ram was being used on Boot, and yet there was 50-60MB of used Swap file (Which was set to around 170MB iirc at the time). Fix that, you get a performance boost (See: Ramdrive).

Now, if you're going to have a RamDrive, you'll have lots of Ram anyways (512MB as a minimum), so you can see my point?

Totally agree about the hardware! Well said.

However, rumor was around the pre Win2K-sp2 era that SP2 would see Win2K become Microsofts Gaming OS. This never really happened though, but Win2K can still be made into a Gaming OS.
You are right though, WinXP does a better job, especially with DirectX 9.0b!

UT2K3/4 both run natively under Linux, and other big game players are seeing the error of their ways now that HP, Dell, and other big players are getting behind Linux!

Linux runs games, and lots of them.
I had Jedi Knight 2 from a year back and decided to dig it up and give it a whirl. WineX3 worked fine installing it, and to play I simply needed a No-CD fix for the game. Works beautifully with no noticable performance hit! Linux Gaming is coming a long way, and Ark and Xandros are pulling all the stops to help get Linux onto the Mainstream Desktop!

...What I really want to see is a working "Looking Glass" download/trial!

Summary of my two cents>
If you're keen to try something different, then try Ark or Xandros. I'd recommend Ark personally. If you'd rather not try Linux, then XP would be my OS of recommendation (Dont forget some good AV software!).

Cheers

227636 2004-04-06 11:51:00 I don't think Dell and HP would be getting behind Linux... that would break their contract with MS... the clause that says, you will not distro any other bootable programs other than microsoft ones....

And anyway, HP and MS are too close for them to start backing linux.

I hope I am very very wrong here....

227638 2004-04-06 12:01:00 > Linux runs games, and lots of them.

It's Diablo 11 LOD Expansion I need to run on Linux. I'll even be able to slip Mepis Linux onto the family machine if it can run Black Hawk Down and a couple of others in that category to satisfy No 1 son. I haven't done any research on what it will run yet. Something to get onto in due course.

Matthew go, as before, with XP for now if your system spec's support it.
