227550 2004-04-06 11:06:00 Yes, I agree with kiwibeat, I have used Drive Image 2002 in the past, and found it SO MUCH better and easier than Ghost.
I believe XCOPY won't handle long file names?

Just my 5 Cents worth

227551 2004-04-06 11:21:00 xcopy wont do it for you.

use ghost or such like.

xcopy32 way is as follows.....

you need to have a running windows system other then the system to be cloned (three hard drives, 1 runnnig the OS,1 to copy and 1 to recive the copy)

the command is xcopy32 /h/i/c/k/o/r/y d:*.* e:*.*

this will copy ALL fiels includint hidden and system files, it will make all directories including empty ones and it will handel the long file names.

only other thing to do is the MBR.

make a boot disk for the version of windows set up the system with only the new hard drive and boot for the floppy. run fdisk /mbr and fdisk will make a MBR on the new drive.

all done.

this cant be done on a running OS and so the need for three hard drives.

most likly more that you want this time so jsut use ghost :-)

227552 2004-04-06 12:42:00 I've found that with DriveImage 2002, it doesn't copy the MBR or bootloader~. PoWa (203)
227553 2004-04-06 22:12:00 Easy method my way, and has been done OK. Partition new drive into 2 & 8 gb sectors - Use nero HD backup and burn to CD existing HD - will need 4 cd's - then restore to new HD.

227554 2004-04-06 23:52:00 Well team, there seems to be more way of killing a cat than drowning it in cream doesn’t there?

So, have we established, no argument, xcopy won’t do it? Is that the final word on xcopy.

Robsonde, I see where your coming from but unfortunately the need for a third HDD makes things a little more complicated than I was hopeing for.

Billy, I found the thread you referred to and the site on Ghost. Excellent reading, so I’ll go back for further study. I hadn’t read the previous thread because it referred to Ghost 2003 & Windows XP. (Light years ahead of me who is still migrating to Win98se from Dos 3.1) :D

Peter H, sounds not a bad twist on things as one would always have that point to return to, although after a while I guess the Disks would be obsolete. Other problem is I don’t have Nero HD backup. I have Nero which came with my CD writer but I’ve not seen HD backup on it.

Also thanks to everyone else for their suggestions. Unfortunately, some of the programmes you refer to I have never heard of and have no idea where to obtain them.

Soooo, I guess the smart thing to do is swat up Ghost?

227555 2004-04-07 00:30:00 I used this program because I had Win98SE and it worked perfectly for me and I had no experience:

A little study and you will be fine.

227556 2004-04-07 02:13:00 BM Re Nero - cancel out the options until you get the Main page - If it opens with The Wizard, just click on Nero. Then click on top left - file - and one option is "Burn HD Backup" Basicly, this option will copy the whole partition & then very easy to restore to your new drive. You will need to boot from a floppy to do so. Just a standard W95 98 boot disc with CD drivers on it works fine.

227557 2004-04-07 04:11:00 Facinating, not sure how I’ll kill this cat yet.

I’ve downloaded xxcopy Rob and all the instructions. Only 245k zipped, so no big deal there.

Even found the Clone HD in Nero Peter so we have that option on hand and all for the cost of four floppy’s.

And, I’m still studying Ghost Billy, which a this stage looks more complex but may still prove to be the best option.

Nothing’s cut and dried these days is it. I guess the sensible thing to do is try everything and then be in a position to comment on which is the best and or easiest.

Thanks again everyone

Bob

227558 2004-04-07 04:32:00 IMHO it is best to use a solution designed and optimised for that function.

If I may borrow your words and change direction slightly:

There may well be many ways to skin a cat, but a good skinning knife works best.

Cheers
