But why an earth dont you want a static IP, you say anonymity?? but it dont matter how often your IP changes you are still trackable?? only way to be truely anonymous is to use a anonymous proxy

Isn't the case and never was

You're only trackable if your ISP releases your details

Why?

You're no more anonymous with a static IP than with a dynamic one . All your use is logged by IP, and if you're on dynamics, your ISP will log which IP you were assigned at a given time anyway so if there is a need to trace it back they can .

It depends on the indivdual ISP .

JetStream Starter can not have a fixed IP, end of story, it's a network restriction imposed by Telecom .

The other JetStream plans, Surf, 256K or Full-Speed are dependent on the ISP as to whether they provide static IP's or not . Some do by default, some don't at all, some do but charge extra for the privilege .

Not your business . But a hypothetical scenario is if you visit a forum on occasions and don't want to be identified by IP . Also if you gain the dislike of a forum owner who also happens to be an uber-hacker, then you're more at risk of being, ummm, targetted and hacked

Of course you are . It's only your ISP that it doesn't make a difference to

Well of course it does, Mr Genius . That's exactly the point of my question in this post

If you're worried about pissing off Forum owners and having them hack you, then its time to review your personal security. Get a better OS (See "secure"), or sort out a good hardware firewall.

I spoke with somebody from Orcon on the phone who said they would sort me out with a Dynamic IP address if I wanted.

Ring them up and have a chat

Chill.

227518 2004-04-07 03:24:00 Thx Chilly. Nah I'm not worried about giving forum owners a hard time (I run a couple myself) - it was just an example.

Now I've spoken to orcon several times and as far as I've been informed... the definitive answer is that I cannot have a dynamic IP on this plan... it's not up to them - it's Telecom's stance. Weird, but that's what I've been imlicitly advised.

PS Hey I reckon my PC security is about/almost as good as it gets for a residential user. And no way am I gonna give up my beloved XP *hugs computer*

But if the biggie hackers are determined to hack a system, not many people can be 100% secure... ask the USA Army and Microsoft.

The idea of a hardware firewall is good, and one fine day I'll implement one ;)

If you knew the answer why did you ask.
Perhaps the point of your question " So what's the situation for 'Surf' plan users with other ISP's" was not very clear.

You should have been more specific if all you wanted to know was the name of ISP's who supply Jetstream with a dynamic IP

Well if certain thuddo's could work out the point of my question, then I assumed most others could too

227522 2004-04-07 05:25:00 If that was in fact your question then no one has answered it so we can assume that it was not clear what you wanted .

You already knew a Xtra give a Dynamic IP with Jetstream as you previously had that .

Do you still want to know the names of other ISP's who do that or are you happy to go back to Xtra .
