227186 2004-04-06 00:30:00 I can't help with your problem sorry, Chill, but my Win XP computer has not been able to log in to Hotmail via a browser at all for quite a while now and I have no idea why . I have tried everything I can think of short of a reformat as even a reinstall did not fix it .

Strangely enough Outlook Express can send and receive Hotmail emails with no problems and the Win 98 computer has no problems either .

I will be watching this thread with interest to see if you or anyone else can come up with a solution . Good luck .

I am not sure if you receive an error message or not, but Hotmail using IE6 requires JavaScript. Check to see it is enabled -

On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
Click the Security tab.
Click Custom Level.
Scroll to Scripting. Under Active scripting, click Enable.
Click OK twice.

I have mine disabled, but I can still access Hotmail going through Windows Messenger, and directly in Netscape.

Im thinkin that may just be the easiest solution.....

You say a format/reinstall didnt fix it??? Odd....

Thanks for that, checked the setting but it was already set as you recommend.

Anything else, or should I resign to a format?

Cheers

No, I didn't say that . I said a reinstall didn't fix it . I have not reformatted yet .

Actually I have a confession to make now . :8}

Yes, mine is working again . :p

It's really weird though because I have not done anything special, that I know of anyway, since the last time I tried a couple of weeks ago . And as far as I know the kids are not able to get into their Hotmail accounts . I got an earful only last night when one of them complained bitterly that it wasn't fair that the Win 98 computer could do it but not this one .

I don't plan to try too hard to fix it as it has its advantages in that respect, ie keeping them off my Beast . ]:) :p :D

227192 2004-04-06 03:35:00 Chill have you tried this MS KB (support.microsoft.com), another you might try is your hosts file for references to Hotmail and Yahoo.

227193 2004-04-06 04:07:00 Hi Murray,

There is no error, no 404's, and the system is fully patched.... :-(

Thanks though :-)

227194 2004-04-06 06:19:00 Blimmin strange . I did a little search for your problem (as you no doubt have done) and came up with the MS thing . It was suggested as a solution to a very similar problem to yours even tho the messages in the MS article don't match either . The person fixed his problem after reinstalling win 2k with SP3 and his sytem had been completely patched pior to and during the problem (much the same as you roll back IE, uninstall, patch, clean out) .

Did you look at the hosts file? That worked for someone .

It seems that an MS OS patch plus changes to the sites have brocken things for a number of people who find solutions in different ways I guess, depending on their OS version, it's state of health and whether Jupiter is aligned with Mars . Some have never figured it out .

Desn't Mozilla (not Firefox/bird) have a neat trick of masking itself as IE for certain purposes? Sure I spotted it in the manual the other night or is this only in the Linux version .
