227358 2004-04-05 09:47:00 Hi all,

I have completed assembly of my new PC, but when I try to boot it up for the first time it cannot find a suitable boot device.

Specs are as follows:

Asustek P4P800 Deluxe mobo
P4 2.8Ghz CPU
2 x SATA Hard drives
1 x NEC CD ROM

During POST, system identifies 2 SATA drives, then displays a list as follows:

Primary Master : NEC
Primary Slave : No Device
Sec Master : No Device
Sec Slave : No Device

When I enter the BIOS setup however the main display shows:

Primary IDE Master : Not Detected
Primary IDE Slave : Not Detected
Sec IDE Master : ST3120026AS (first SATA HDD)
Sec IDE Slave : ST3120026AS (second SATA HDD)

Why is my CD ROM not detected when it saw it during POST?

When I change Primary IDE Master from AUTO to CDROM and restart, IU get the message "Primary Master Drive - ATAPI incompatible

Heeeeeelp

227359 2004-04-05 10:18:00 You do have the jumpers in the right places, don't you? Have you set the BIOS to auto-detection? Susan B (19)
227360 2004-04-05 10:38:00 No jumpers on SATA drives, and BIOS set to Auto detect, but no drives detected by BIOS (only POST).

Jumper on CD ROM is Master. CD ROM is only IDE device.

Panic over. It appears that the fairies or pixies or some similar plugged the CD ROM ribbon cable into the Primary RAID connector rather than the Primary IDE connector, coz it couldn't have been me :8}

Now it's too late to load XP, so I'll leave it till tomorrow.

Cheers

Just my opinion here. If the Primary Master is the CD drive then you will probably have problems.. Definitely set up a hard disk as Primary master.
Are you trying to boot off the CD then partition and format hard disks?

The operating system if loaded will want to boot off the primary master.

You can get to boot off a CDRom Disk but this is set in the BIOS boot order rather than connecting the CDRom drive to to primary master cable.

Nice one, Miami, well done. :-)

So.... including installing Windows, how long did it actually take from whoa to go in the end? :p :D
Susan B (19)
227365 2004-04-06 01:51:00 Unfortunately, Susan, installing windows hasn't happened yet.

I boot the system from the Win XP Pro CD and when I press ENTER to install Windows XP, I get a screen telling me setup could not detect any drives. After lots of googling I discovered that I needed to create a floppy with SATA drivers on it and press F6 at the start of the Windows setup.

As I have the 2 identical drives, I was intending to set up RAID 1 at the same time, so I created another floppy with the RAID drivers. With the BIOS all set up, I started the Windows setup, pressed F6 and added the SATA drivers and RAID drivers, but still Windows XP says no drives detected.

Just before leaving the house this morning I tried a setup with no RAID configured, but adding the SATA drivers via F6. This actually progressed me to the Windows EULA screen, by which time I had to leave it, so I guess it looks like I should just set it up as a non-RAID system, then convert after Windows is installed.

Unless anybody has any brilliant ideas, of course.

Cheers
