227309 2004-04-05 05:52:00 Hi There,

I have just installed a DSE external 56K modem. Using outlook express as the email client I find I can download any size email but if I then try to send that same large email the upload just locks up.

A two or three sentence email gets sent fine. The ISP is Clear.

Any ideas? Colin

227310 2004-04-05 05:58:00 Check your AntiVirus settings.
Are you scanning outgoing emails perhaps, using Nortons? If so turn the function off and try.

227312 2004-04-06 06:47:00 You haven't enabled a message rule by any chance like: Where the message size is more than | Delete it. Or some such?. Go to: Tools menu > Message Rules > Mail > Modify.

Thanks for your help.

Your advise would be for incoming mail. My problem is for out going.

227314 2004-04-07 15:59:00 Try different mail client, like Mozilla Thunderbird. PoWa (203)
227315 2004-04-07 21:44:00 Keep an eye on the connect speed with Clear. It is up and down like a yoyo, been as low as 4800 instead of the expected 52000.

Just diconnect, and try again.

227316 2004-04-09 13:01:00 With my mail service if I try to send a message it refuses until I have checked for incoming mail first. I don't know why it happens but it does. The ISP can't help either.
Even if there is no Incoming mail, just going through the motions fixes it.

Who provides the mail service? They may use a POP request to authenticate access to the SMTP server - it's quite a common thing, I know Yahoo uses it.

227318 2004-04-17 15:16:00 Have you enabled the "my server requires authentication" setting in outlook? if not, what may be the case is that when you try to send mail, the server rejects you because you haven't supplied a username and password for your (usually) SMTP server. However, when you recieve mail, your pc logs in to your POP3 server, and maybe this login has an independant timeout that also covers the SMTP stuff? Worth a thought, try checking this setting. it's under Tools>Accounts, properties (select your mail account first), servers, then the "my server requires authentication" checkbox. Bletch (244)
