227925 2004-04-07 22:52:00 Hello people

Im about to take a exam for my course this afternoon.I have a small question that i was thinking

Imagine yourself in a in a large organization.and you had to choose between dialup and adsl .
As you can see if you were to use dialup u will need a lot of phone lines running into the organization but for adsl...How does adsl line work?

Im not looking at the speed of the answer Im looking at the phone line.
If the organization uses dialup each computer might need to connect to the net but for adsl line how does it work?
Can 1 adsl modem support like 50 computers?

227926 2004-04-07 23:00:00 As I see it, with either service you can have the modem in the gateway computer, and the to a switch and the all other computers connect through the gateway computer .

Its kind of like, instead of putting the ISP phone number, you put the IP number of the gateway computer .

However you can get adsl routers that have lots of networks plugs in them for connecting more than one computer to, but if you wanted 50, you would need dedicated routers or switches . . .

Thats how I see it anyway .

227927 2004-04-07 23:13:00 Is there a limit on how many can use the adsl line?
I mean there's no limit of course but for dialup if u expect 50 people to share the same line imagine the speed. but for adsl... 50 people... need an average of ??line?

227928 2004-04-07 23:55:00 Our business uses ADSL throughout the country in the many branches. Each PC connects using network cables to a server, which is plumbed into the adsl line. For standard web browsing bandwidth it doesn't seem to be an issue, but then again we don't all download files continually. Average size branches have up to 10 PCs, Auckland and Wellington for example have over 100.

One economic consideration with businesses is that they pay per minute for phone calls, so each using a dial-up connection can work out at about $3 an hour connected = $24 a day. That's $1200 per day for 50 pc's not to mention the equipment that would be needed to set up an exchange in the office for 50 separate phone lines, PLUS the business rental charge per month $60 ish per line from Telecom.
