Going to perform a format and re-install on a PC running windows 95...

But users cd-key info has been misplaced, is it possible to find the existing cd key in the registry? if so where and is this legal way of doing it? :)

Cheers 4 any info!!!

227880 2004-04-07 07:02:00 Use regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion

Highlight Current Version and in the right hand pane you will find the Product ID (it's not called a CD key), you will also see the registered owner.

There is nothing illegal in looking in the Registry :)

227883 2004-04-07 12:33:00 Hey Pheonix,

It's been a while since I've been on Win95 but can you verify that right clicking works?

I guess it depends on which release, but did Win95 have context-menus at the time?

It's been too long since I've gone back, but I remember when I did, the habits of the newer OS's made going back a really hard time, thanks MS.

227884 2004-04-07 21:50:00 Yes 95 had context menus.

On 98/me, you can search the registry using one of the strings of figures given under the my computer-properties and the installation key is not too far away. Just a couple below it if I recal.
