227612 2004-04-06 05:43:00 Hi people! :) My sister has a friend (a very Hot one) that has Windows Xp Home Edition...my question is...Can i use the System Recovery disks that i have on her computer?? She's had the comp for ages and didnt even know about disk defrag or nuthi' she has Kazza and heaps of other spy stuff, i've run a few progs on it and cleaned up heaps of junk files etc, but it still runs like a pig, can i reformat her hard drive and start again?? jase12 (4868)
227613 2004-04-06 06:30:00 Yes you can. If they are her system discs on her machine. Pretty drastic action to kill a few critters tho unless they've totally trashed things.

What programs have you run on it and are they all up to date with latest pattern files, etc. Have you done a disc cleanup, whats running at start up, what unnecessary app's does she have. Whats the machine spec's, it could just be a pig you know ;)

Run both Spybot S&E and Adaware, Highjackthis and a file and registry cleaner if there are still problems.

You can restore the system to an earlier state using the win XP CD or system/recovery discs without having to format and re-install. Last option would be the latter, after backing up her important data.

227614 2004-04-07 01:32:00 Hi! Thanx for your reply Murry :) Um i dont think she has her own System Recovery disks..thats why i wanted to know if we could use ours on her machine...I ran Ad-aware and Spybot Search..found heaps, also ran X-Cleaner and found a few things, as well as using System Mechanic, and Reg cleaner, She says that things are running much better now, but she still cant get in2 MSN, but will take it up directly wif them :)
Gonna go over an have another look at it later..I tried Hijack this on my own computer but found it a little confusing when i got to the web site :)..Have shown her how to do disk defrag etc..now gonna show her how to use sys restore, an how to back up her files...Thanx for your input!! Very much appreciated!! PEACE

227615 2004-04-07 08:45:00 She might not have back up cds, the hard drive could be partitioned with a spare xp on it. I have bought a compaq puter, and it come with no back up cds, just a spare partition, with all the xp files on it. I did a destructive system recovery, and it just uses its own files from the partitioned hard drive. Mind you, I did make up a back up system using 6 cd's just in case the whole hard drive crashes. supergran (108)
