228322 2004-04-10 01:58:00 Further to my last post ...

What port do External Cd Writers connect to ? That is other than USB.

My laptop has both parallel and a 9 pin serial. Would either of those ports be suitable?

228323 2004-04-10 02:06:00 no. they are simply to slow. either usb or firewire. usb2 is prefered. tweak'e (174)
228324 2004-04-10 02:33:00 OK tweak'e, fully understand that. Speed is not important on this occasion as the external writer will be used only a couple of times.

So what port do they connect to ? :-)

????

either usb (usb2 prefered) or firewire (if you can find one).

228326 2004-04-10 02:43:00 How old is your laptop? If less than a couple of years then it will have a USB port that the CD writer can be used with. Note that if the USB port is not version USB 2 then the writer may not work as the connection will not be fast enough. tommy (2826)
228327 2004-04-10 03:03:00 I doubt if you would get a new CD writer with a parallel port connection. About 100 kB/s is the maximum ... so that might handle a 4X writer. Serial ports are just too slow. USB 1.1 with a maximum of 12 Mb/s would be "fast enough" to be useful. USB 2.0 or FireWire will eat it.

I've got a 10 Mb/s Ethernet adaptor which fits on a parallel port. That works, but it's slow. Very useful when it's needed though. ;-)
