228116 2004-04-13 11:02:00 WOW! I cannot believe it . I never knew geeks were so caring of society :p

Well, I find it quite amazing that although there may be one kind of NZer, they are sub divided into age groups . There are the more *mature* ones who will support any Asian . There are the middle aged who think Asians are bad drivers, blah blah, and um . . I wonder what ethnicity the drivers that zig zag in and out of lanes during rush hour traffic, run over roundabouts circle things are . Then we get to the teens, if normal, they will accept you and feel cool about it . If they have the arrogant type of parents, they will abuse you in the worst ways possible .

Yes, I admit, a lot of the new immigrants here has been a disaster . I even have trouble admitting that I'm an Asian, really sad I know . Problem is, people don't relise that I've lived here longer than most South Africans, British, Australians, etc . my age have . I've accepted NZ as my home, instead of wherever I came from :p I speak with a NZ accent .

What shocks me is the fact that when I make enquiries over the phone, apply for jobs, try fundraise, people are completely cool with me . But . . only until the moment they see me physically, black hair, nah! get out . why? Because they don't realise that I'm an Asian while on the phone with a kiwi accent . BTW, yes I speak English the majority of the time, and I can communicate better in English .

As I've tried to discuss with some other people the other day, is that, the 21st century is a century where travel will be brought to greater height . People, will not stay in their land of origin . You have to accept that their may be Canadians wondering around in Asia . Or indig . Africans in England . Or Polynesians in Europe .

However, it all come down to betrayal . Yes, one may start to hate their place of birth after departing it for decades . Afterall, aren't we ALL the same . Human beings? Why start war? It is pathetic . Ask any Canadian what they think of Americans, and vice-versa . Your likely to get a negative feedback .

What I find MORE pathetic is the fact that people of one big country move into a smaller country and start to gain power and control over the country . Yes, this may not be the same as what I just said . This is just like Auzzies taking over NZ (if it did happen) Similarly, China taking over Hong Kong, and now Taiwan . Simply not a good help towards society .

All of the above has been my personal views as an "immigrant" . I have said all the above coming from a kiwi point of view, as I like to most of the time . I know a point of 3+ generation chinese, they share the same mind as me . Love this place, but cannot be loved . . . very sad indeed .

Should read, "China taking over Hong Kong, and now trying to take over Taiwan" . Anyone seen the news lately regarding the people of Hong Kong protesting against the Mainland Chinese? Good on them . . . I wish US would wake up and realise that if it doesn't do something, China will soon start to cause some social problems, despite its economic growth .

And no, I'm not from HK .

I see myself been advantaged by the fact that I can think from a non-Asian and Asian's point of view . Pity that neither of them value my thoughts .

228119 2004-04-14 08:03:00 Whoa SY! Great stuff . Good to see your opinions . I'm ashamed of European Kiwis who show you the cold shoulder . Ethnic Asians whom I have known at school and in later life have all been decent and likable people .

In fact - and this is rather sad, I suspect Asian and Indian people are more respected in New Zealand than Maori . Why is that? Whats gone wrong? Is it our European work ethic which makes us admire some and not others?

I am glad there are people like you who think more of us :D Here are more fact, I attend one of the best schools in the country, I think, the second-ranked all boys school . Last year, we had a record, and that was the amount of names entered on our honours board for academic excellence . Record amount of 7 people . Of the 7, 100%, i . e . all 7 were Asians . What does that tell . In my form level, I, with many Asians topped the level . Yes, there are smart genius European, they will forever remain unbeatable . But, the trend is, Asians will either settle for the top, or the bottom .

While I am on Asian success, I will outline one very interesting story . A person called Dr . Henry Lee . He arrived in Taiwan at the age of 4 after being born in China, as youngest of 14 . Father passed away early . Mother carried the kids, at 20s, he went to train as police, only because it was the very few education that was free and had a job guaranteed . Until he married, did he want to do the unbelievable . Set on a journey, into USA, with his wife, with exactly $50USD . He did everything beyond belief, he told the Americans that he was going to make the impossible become possible (Americans had discriminated Asians too) Now, he's the chief criminalist, last time I check, may of rised even further . He broke so many historical criminal cases, that he himself has trouble remembering .

Now, it is this determination that sets people high . American citizens could not believe that the "stupid" recruiter had recruited an Asian . Still today, how many know him as an Asian, not many . In law studies, students think that he's a dark skinned American, as many of them have the last name Lee .

I am personally set to break new grounds . I mean this . I feel that majority of NZers are like Americans . Until they know you well, they will recognise you as an outsider; an invader to the property . My neighbours, exactly the same, they now see us as the "best neighbours ever had" . While the 'bad' Asians may think we're a disgrace to them by betraying them, I do not think . Once you arrive at a new land, you commit to that new land, no question, no hassles .

Unsuprisingly, I have been looked in the eye negatively every time I take my CV into the store, they cannot believe that an Asian can do things I did years ago . Very insulting to find managers who simply dump your application in random draws in the counter, along with all the gift vouchers, etc .

As for Indians, I mean no offence, but NZers do really rely on them too much . That get placed in job without a hassle compared to Asians . Just because their native language may be English, soooo much, I mean sooo much of them cannot do any better than us Asians .

Afterall, pronounciation of Maori words is pretty much the only thing we can't do with skills . How's that skill useful outside NZ anyway?

I have a life-long dream, to write a book, and to explain all the above in more detail . In the book I plan to retell my life, and my road out of my birth country . Realistically, I would not believ 1% of the NZ population know how much I have put into my life to get on this road . Just because I may still be half way through my second decade of living, I can pretty much guarantee you that I have got more experience overall, than most other 20s, and maybe even 30s . To date, I'm applying for my fourth money-earning job .

Writing this, I feel so great, it's probably the best thread I've been involved with whilst been at PF1 for such a long time . Probably the only time I've told my story . Thanks for the opportunity guys . It is things like this which keep people coming back .

:D

228121 2004-04-14 09:39:00 Why applying for so many job? Because I've found the first three waste of time, don't learn any new skills .

Last year, aged 14, I sat an International Examination set for British 16 yr olds . In it, were things out of the Stage One NZ Uni syallbus . As crazy as that may seem, I passed one of them with a top-end A . Suprise isn't it, actually about 85% of the people who sat that paper got an A . See, don't have to be smart, just got to be determined and committed, and yes, most of us had no sleep for one whole month whilst preparing for those exams . At most, only 5 hour or so . . . .

Indeed yes. I lived in Malaysia for some years, and it was the Chinese who worked hard and did well, closely followed by the Indian community. Sadly, the Malays did not try so hard, and ended up behind in so many things, leading to racial tension and to bad race riots in 1969. I think it is still there underneath, plus the new factor of radical Islam.

Yes, Malaysia is yet another good example of diversified races. Sadly, I still don't see the dark-skinned people, e.g. Maori, American Indians, Indians, Middle easterns working to their full potential. Many could do much better. Must be their nature, to be proud and arrogant once one goal is accomplished?
