228520 2004-04-11 02:50:00 I have bought a new 40G hardrive a few months ago. At that time, I had installed it with a new operating system (XP) in addition to Windows 98 running on the original harddrive.

My computer is quite old and so BIOS could not previously detect my harddrive as a 40G one, but detected it as 8.4G. After installation using software from the manufacturer's site, it somehow made it so that I can use the drive as a 40G one.

A few days ago, my BIOS data was unexpectedly erased. Now, I cannot boot from my 40G harddrive. BIOS would not detect my newer (40G) hardrive, not even as an 8 G one. Hence, i cannot use my partition software or boot WIn XP from it.

My BIOS would just stop/freeze and not do anything if i set it to automatically detect my hard drive. All i can do now is to set it as "no hard drive" and boot to the original smaller HD with win 98 on it.

I think my hard drive is currently installed as primary slave, with my original 6G one as primary master, with DVD and CD writer as Secondary master and slave respectively.

I want to know how I could:
a) get access to the drive from Win 98 without formatting it (because I need the data on it)
b)make it so that BIOS can detect the harddrive (hopefully as a 40G one) and so allow Win XP to boot.

Thank You for your help

228522 2004-04-11 04:06:00 is there any other way? I don't have another comp that can do the job plzhelpmenow (5507)
228523 2004-04-11 04:33:00 sounds like your missing the hardrive details (auto won't work as you have found out and the actuall hardrive info won't work) check the hardrive manafactures site for the info (it most likly be with the overlay software you used). once that hardrive info is entered then the bios should see the overlay. tweak'e (174)
228524 2004-04-11 06:23:00 I have now somehow got bios to "see" my harddrive, but it can only see it as a 33G harddrive, which I think is the limit of the BIOS. I then tried booting from a partition on the drive, but it didn't work. I had a FAT32(with XP installed) and a NTFS partition, which contains programs, downloads etc. I tried opening the FAT32 partition from Win 98, but all I see is junk. I think it is because the overlay is not working. Does anyone know what I should do now? plzhelpmenow (5507)
228525 2004-04-11 07:43:00 I dont know if this will work for you (has for me in the past)...

boot 98, THEN put the hdd in while the comp is on...

sounds silly...

You could buy a separate IDE controller (which is independant of the BIOS to a certain degree.) but that would cost about $150
