| 228499 | 2004-04-11 01:52:00 | Hello there, I've been meaning to use Linux seriously for a while, and about 2 months after I installed it, I realised I had a few important questions. I have Knoppix 3.3, using KDE (I have mandrake 9.2 but don't use it.) I installed Knoppix to the Hard Drive. Ok 1) I have a VT82C686 Apollo Super AC'97 integrated Audio Chipset (sndconfig told me). It is "not supported" :| I download linux drivers, but the site that gave me them told me to install them to /usr/src/sys , but that don't exist on my Knoppix. Where, how and with what do I install them ?! (I tried using it as both root and user, but none worked) 2) I need this computer as a server. How do I run apache? Is it in the menu - I cant find it! I'm Linux Newbie, have pity... and what is a SSH server? When I start these "Services" nothing ever happens. I need Squid as well, and Smail... but I can't figure out if they are running, where they are running or how to configure them. Tired of searching google. How do I configure the SAMBA server ? 3) Why does Mozilla log onto FTPs with anonymous by default? Can i Change it? Where? I've forgotten my other questions (lucky you *smacks head again*)..... If there are other posts on these, please tell me... I've tried searching but they often don't yield good results. If you know of a tutorial, I would be very grateful to be told! Thanks, Growly |

| 228503 | 2004-04-11 06:49:00 | What form do the drivers for your sound card come, tar.gz, rpm or deb. You may well have to compile them in which case, the directory you install them to doesn't really matter. Its when you do the 'make install', it needs to install them in to the appropriate bin directory. Also as the install mentions a src directory, it must be source code which you need to compile. There are a number of good ftp servers for linux, have a nose here directory.google.com |

| 228505 | 2004-04-11 09:36:00 | Traditionally getting a Apache server going involves editing a plain text file called /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf. These days there are graphical interfaces to do this but knowing how the plain text file works is still best! File location is for Redhat - may be different for other distributions. Once you have set up the text file, you need to start the daemon (service). Done in Redhat with the command "/etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd start". Instead of start can use stop or restart. Then setup the startup script so that the server starts on a new start of the OS. |
