You posted the above on another post. You (or others) might be interested in this fix. I fixed an old keyboard the other day for a relative. Space bar wouldn't work at all. A cheap new keyboard is only about $20, but I like to fix things where possible, especially if it is an easy fix which this one was. I removed screws from back, lifted back off, carefully removed the transparent membrane, identified which were the contact points for the spacebar key, cleaned them with isopropyl, used a tiny screwdriver to very carefully smear graphite powder on the contact points, very carefully cleaned the excess from near the contact points and gently blew it away, (filthy stuff, blow it outside the house and don't get it on your fingers), reassembled taking particular care that the main input contacts for the membrane sheet mated up correctly and were actually making contact. It worked perfectly after assembly and is currently still going well after about two weeks use. Graphite would be obtainable from a locksmith. You would need less than about one eighth of a teaspoon, so ask nicely and you could get it for nothing. If I had none at all and it was a fix or chuck situation, I would try shaving a very soft black lead pencil, say a 5B, and see if that works. Don't get the graphite anywhere else other than the exact spot where it is required. Cheers. |
