228413 2004-04-10 11:10:00 Hi,

I am working on a friends pc which has the fol problem: It has a problem powering up. Sometimes it will start up straight away other times (most times) if you leave the pc on it will start up anywhere from minutes to hours later. It seems that it is waiting to get to a certain temperature before it wants to start up. Symptoms: Turn the power on, the psu fan is going and the power on led. Everything else is dead. The hdd unit doesn't respond at all. I have tried another psu in this pc with the same result. I have removed the ram, hdd, video, modem etc one at a time and tried with no luck. I have removed the cpu with the same result. However, What I have noticed is that when I remove the power connector from the motherboard, the peripherals all power up as per normal. So my thoughts are that the psu is ok, and the fault could be the cpu or the motherboard? My gut feeling is that there could possibly be a dry solder joint on the mobo hence the pc waiting to warm up before starting up. The CPU is a Celeron 266 P3, Slot 1 type (sec).

Any other thoughts on this issue would be appreciated.

If the problem is still there, then it can only be MOBO or CPU. Then maybe trade-me for another?

228415 2004-04-12 13:54:00 I have this kind of problem happened to 3 of my pc in the past (when switched on, only the lights and fan runs only, everything else dead. sometimes boots normally), and the most recent 1 was 2 weeks ago. Your power supply is unstable. I recommend you to get a new power supply asap. The last one that happened to me killed my mb, cd writer and my dvd writer. big lost! :( Blue_face (1148)
