229024 2004-04-13 10:26:00 what is a SPARCstation1?

an old sun computer .

SPARCstation 1 (4/60)
Code Name: Campus
Chassis: Square pizza box
Processors: Fujitsu MB86901A or LSI L64801 @ 20 MHz
Weitek 3170 FPU
MMU: Sun 4c
Hardware Contexts: 8
Level-2 Cache: 64 KB write-through; direct-mapped, virtually indexed, virtually tagged, 16-byte lines; 50 ns cycle
RAM: 100 ns 1 x 9 or 4 x 9 30-pin SIMMs
16 slots
4 slots per bank
(64 MB max)
Bus: 3 Sbus slots @ 20 MHz (slot 3 slave-only)
Audio: AMD AM79C30A
Floppy Disk Drive: 3 . 5" 720kB (early) or
3 . 5" 1 . 44 MB (later)
SCSI Drive Bays: 2 x 3 . 5" on sleds

Notes: The first SPARCstation is housed in a pizza box with three SBus slots . There is room for a floppy drive and two 3 . 5" hard drives . The maximum of 64 MB of RAM is impressive for such a vintage .

Conclusion: Dirt cheap but terribly slow; good for Linux or non-graphical use .

going for super cheep , make an offer .

most boxes come with ram, most work, all need SCSI disk to be of much use .

i am in wellington and you have to some get them, as is where is, must go soon before the flatmate chucks them :-)

229026 2004-04-14 00:03:00 I've got a 3/60 on the porch . 68000 (no memory management) 2MB (soldered in, no sockets --- memory was expensive then, no disk, but a lovely big B/W monitor . It starts up, and I can use a terminal (no Sun KB, but I've got a mouse) to run the diagnostics , but I haven't got around to setting up one of the Linux boxes to be its download server for NetBSD .

Even that with 2MB was capable of hosting multiple users on terminals .

Yes, LUG = Linux Users Group

You can find a list of them here (www.linux.net.nz) and other links.

229031 2005-04-08 10:23:00 I know this is an old thread, but my request fits in here :D

At work we have an old sparc workstation (which is currently essential to operations), but its screen recently died. Although a year or so ago we had several spare screens, this is no longer the case, so I was hoping somebody might have an old Sun screen (with the sun video connection to the workstation) they could possibly donate/loan/sell cheaply to us for use until the sparc's replacement is fully up and running (hopefully within the next 2-4 months - officially to be by June 30)

At least I think it's a Sparc :) Definitely Sun - don't know if there were other workstations by Sun other than Sparc?

Any takers? :D

229032 2005-04-08 11:22:00 cant help as such....

sun makes many other things other then sparc stations. all have the same video plug.

any sun monitor will work.

as for where to get one?
I dont know.

I dont know. Thanks D. I'm pretty sure it is a sparcstation, but it is the screen we need, so any Sun screen will probably do :) The one we're replacing is 20", so I doubt we'll get any offers of one that big ;) but at this stage anything will do. It gave up only a few months before it was due to be replaced after running for years :D hows that for timing :P
