228920 2004-04-13 01:02:00 Win XP Pro, SP1a

Trying to share a DVD ROM from computer 1, to computer 2, since 2 has no DVD drive.

I went to right click, properties, share on the DVD drive, on comp 1. That put DVD as a shared folder. On comp 2 I can access the folder, and see what is on the DVD, but I can not play DVD movies, because it wants me to open a file, and it will not recognise it as a CD/DVD, only a folder.

So I tried mapping it as a network drive, but it just has a hard drive icon, not a CD icon, so it still is just a folder.

How can I get comp 2 to recognise the shared DVD as a DVD Rom, not a folder? So I can open windows media player, and play dvd in the menu?

228921 2004-04-13 01:39:00 What are you using to play the movie with?

Try powerdvd for one .

Or rip the VOB files to one of the computers using smartripper and watch it like that with powerdvd .

228922 2004-04-13 01:51:00 Look up VideoLAN Client.

Its primarily a Unix/Linux/BSD app, but there's a Win32 Port of it. Ive streamed DVD's from a my linux box to a Windows client before.

Its dead easy to use, see:

228923 2004-04-13 02:05:00 Sorry, forgot to add that you can use the VideoLAN Client software on both the client and server...

Just to avoid confusion

228924 2004-05-03 06:58:00 Is there another ripper program? Smartripper seemed to be in german for me, very confusing. I did not install it, just when this readme or something popped up, maybe it was a lisence thing, it was all german.

English please

228925 2004-05-03 07:13:00 DVD Shrink (dvdshrink.org - Use this to shrink/rip)
DVD Decryptor (Makes .iso files, use as a second option)
DVD Region-free (dvdidle.com - Region free dvd playback)

Hope this helps

228926 2004-05-03 09:22:00 Ok I tried DVD Shrink, spent half an hour extracting it, and now it does not work. Trying to play in DivX. Is there anyway it can make a VCD? mejobloggs (264)
228927 2004-05-03 12:12:00 I think you need to navigate to the DVD's vob file and open that, it will probably play ok, however sometimes you need to start with the
first ifo file to play the entire DVD at once, otherwise you might have to
keep opening vob files.
