2004-04-12 12:56:00 | I cant fathom the logic of WXPs(home)filing system! Why does it repeat and duplicate everything in several places; and can I organise it the way I want? 1. My Docs+ Vickis Docs+Shared Docs+ Recent Docs all have duplicates of the My Docs folders and files 2. Half the docs. are not docs. but files (eg PLS Files,DAT files, shortcuts, theme files, fax coverpages etc; in fact everything I have opened and used). I only want to scroll thru text docs in My Docs 3. My Docs is directory listed ahead of My Computer and local disc C:/ so My Docs/Vicki's Docs and Shared Docs etc are repeated all over again under My Computer/local disc C:/ - Default User; and Owners Docs! 4. Can I remove MY Music/Pics/Videos etc from My Docs and just leave them under My Computer? Not much space taken up yet,(as most of this month spent battling XP) but soon all this duplication will start to cramp my style. I do a lot of word processing so need to keep My Docs strictly to DOCS. I have spent a month battling thru the help/search system; read every Dummies book in the library and been to their wonderful website. No info on filing logic or how to organise the way I WANT. Ive tried drag and dropping and deleting Vicki etc but they come back each time I restart. Altho I am Vicki and Administrator and Owner,I cant find out how to delete the others. What next please? PS: Is there some way I can Copy Screen so that I can paste/show a directory list rather than( inadequately) describe it?

2004-04-12 19:04:00 | whatever you do, don't fight it. For years I used to have a data directory but in the end I gave up and submitted to my documents, etc. Nothing is physically duplicated, so don't worry about disk space. I wouldn't try removing anything, I don't think you can, and if you did it could get really messy. robo.

Can I remove MY Music/Pics/Videos etc from My Docs > and just leave them under My Computer? > No. The folders are in the My Documents folder, and the ones in My Computer are merely links to them. It is possible though, to relocate them, but it will take quite a bit of time and effort. > Not much space taken up yet,(as most of this month > spent battling XP) but soon all this duplication will > start to cramp my style. > I do a lot of word processing so need to keep My Docs > strictly to DOCS. I would recommend using folders etc. to try and keep everything organised. If you want, you can create a "Documents" folder within My Docs, and use it only for word processing files. > > I have spent a month battling thru the help/search > system; read every Dummies book in the library and > been to their wonderful website. You can't delete Administrator, you can't delete Owner, but you can delete Vicki (if You're logged in as Administrator, and use the User Accounts panel in Control Panel). > > What next please? > > PS: Is there some way I can Copy Screen so that I > can paste/show a directory list rather than( > inadequately) describe it? > |

2004-04-12 21:59:00 | hi leonie, what I do is ignore the my docs folder altogether. Instead I have made my own folder on the C: drive, called my files actually. It looks like c:/myfiles. Whenever I want to save anything I just put it in here. That way it doesnt matter who I log in as the folder will always be easy to find. Under this folder I have a music folder, programs, folder, documents folder etc. You can even put a shortcut on the desktop to the folder if you want to. I find it much better then Microsofts way but thats just me. Im sure other people would differ in their opinions. Might be worth a crack anyway. :-) B.

2004-04-12 22:02:00 | Barnabas I tried that for years, but lost the war. There's too many apps and defaults that don't consider you won't want to use "My Documents" (who's idea was it to be a long file name that is a ***** to find in Dos?). I think you are better off succumbing to it. really I do. It's just too difficult otherwise. I've got all my photos in a directory called pics and things still end up in my photos and I have two directories to check. It's just not worth the fight. robo. | 228895 | 2004-04-12 22:43:00 | I am with Barnabas. I have created my own directory structure under C: and have no problems at all. It has the added benefit of not losing all your files as a result of a corrupt login profile, which can happen under XP.

2004-04-12 22:43:00 | Sorry that you had to give up the fight Robo as I am the same as Barnabas . Only difference is that my Documents folder is on the D: partition/drive so that a format of C: doesn't eat all my files/data . I guess you must have quite a few programs that insist on saving your files to My Documents but I have never found it a big problem . They do what I tell them to, not what they want to do . One big incentive for me not to use My Documents is that if my user profile somehow gets corrupted it I won't lose my data when My Documents gets taken down with it . Godfather warned me of this when I first got Win XP as an associate of his lost a lot of data this way .

2004-04-13 03:29:00 | Thanks for all those great tips folks. I WILL create my own folder on C drive. Serious trauma for a control freak otherwise. I am also dejected and defeated, drags tail between legs and wanders off)

2004-04-13 05:17:00 | Hi Robo, I believe it was Winston Churchill who said ..."never give up, never never never never.....". On the other hand I guess he only had Nazis to fight and not the intricacies of MS Windows ;-) B.
