228810 2004-04-12 06:43:00 A brand new computer with a brand new Windows XP OS. Everything works very nicely until I go into "MS Paint" (which I use quite a bit). Everything fine until I click onto a subordinate menu, such as 'print preview' when the menu bar appears to be in code - actually it looks like a sort of tubby Bar Code. The MS NZ support people have taken little interest in this, and say only that it must be that my video card needs updating, which (a) I have tried and (b) my computer supplier says is the most ridiculous thing he has ever heard from so-called technical support people. He wondered if the Bar Code was in fact a foreign text, e.g from Taiwan, and we have tried changing the language settings for the printer driver etc - also no success.

I think I must have a faulty version of XP - though everything else seems OK. Can anyone help me with this?

228811 2004-04-12 06:58:00 OK, did the computer have the OS as a restore disc? I.e. Did you buy like a HP, Compaq, Acer, etc. type PC... if so, take it back to the retailer (if under satisfaction guarantee, e.g. 14 days or so) Get another machine.... if out of the guarantee, then ring the manufacter of the PC straight away...

If you brought WinXP as a CD by itself, e.g. retail pack or OEM, then take it back to the shop and demand a refund. Say the good is faulty, etc. If they say ring MS, say its their responsibility to do so, if not quote the Consumer Guarantee Act... and vola! you know what you're getting... a refund! :D Then go somewhere else and buy a copy :D to avoid the fault in case theres a hole in the batch theyve got...

228812 2004-04-12 22:02:00 Thanks - but why a new machine?? Surely a disc would do? DCSP (5515)
228813 2004-04-12 22:40:00 It's highly unlikely to be a "faulty XP disk" in reality.

Any corruption to the code that would cause that would also mean that the operating system would have failed to load some routines, due to a CRC error. That would have been clearly signalled by error messages at installation time.

Its more likely to be a setup problem, or a corrupted font issue that has transpired subsequent to loading XP.

Start by doing a System File Check if you have not already done so.

Start - Run - SFC /scannow - enter. Note the space after SFC

Yea.... but some restore discs are programmed in a way that it will only work with that particular machine, e.g. it checks the codes of mob, hard disc, etc. before it will work....

Good luck ;-)

228815 2004-04-13 00:21:00 interesting. some of you may remember my little incident with ms paint going spanish on me, the problem was limited not to paint, however. i would try some other programs - primarily image editing and such (most of these went spanish in parts too). i wasnt able to fix it, but after 3 months of ignoring it, it went back to normal. i still havent found out why.

a faulty version of xp? yea, thats called XP itself.....

nah, i dont really think you have a "faulty" version, but perhaps your language settings are mad? maybe they shipped you a bung version of MSpaint. maybe try windows update.

(maybe try a Mac)

228816 2004-04-14 22:54:00 Thanks, Godfather. I followed your instructions for the SFC check - nothing at all happened, so presumably the files are OK. Is there anything else I can try?

Cheers

228817 2004-04-14 23:03:00 "nothing at all happened"?

At the very least you would have seen a box and an informative message that the operation was taking place. Even if there is no problem, it takes several minutes to complete. The box is displayed on screen for that time.

If nothing was seen, its indicative of a poorly spelled or wrong syntax used in the command.

228818 2004-04-15 06:18:00 Hi again! Yes , of course, sorry about that - everything happened exactly as you say (it took quite a few minutes, actually!) but at the end the box and 'informative message' just vanished and that was that! Nothing further, which I took to mean that the files are considered to be in order, though I was rather surprised not to get a message saying something to that effect, or the opposite. DCSP (5515)
228819 2004-04-15 06:32:00 Someone could send him mspaint.exe and the entire fonts folder in a compressed file. PoWa (203)
