| 228804 | 2004-04-12 06:39:00 | Hi, Still playing around in the land of Xandros and have kinda worked out this Xandros Networking thing. It definitely makes for installing apps easier (I still have no idea how to instal tar.gz and others but I will save that for another day). My question is this: When I use Xandros Network to instal apps I click on Evolution but an error appears stating that I have 'broken packages'. This being the case I have been searching online to find out where else I can download. Went to Ximian site and was given an option to open console and, change to root and type command which will automatically download. That too failed with error of: The Ximian Desktop Installer is a graphical application, and either you have no DISPLAY variable set or the root user does not have permission to access your X server. Run 'xhost +localhost' before becoming root, and make sure that the DISPLAY variable is set correctly before running the go-ximian script. any ideas? cheers sam |

| 228805 | 2004-04-12 08:46:00 | Hi Sam I am not familiar with the Xandros software updating tool, but I have been playing with the latest Ark Linux (1.0 alpha 11) and it sounds similar to the Xandros updating system. When you get the broken packages, did you have a look in the options for a "Fix Broken Packages" or similar? I was unable to download any new software myself without getting that error, but soon as I ran the "Fix Broken Packages" option, I was away sailing. If this sounds all goobly-gook to you, then the Xandros Network updating tool is much different and you might need to hang-10 until one of the Xandros users come along :) >The Ximian Desktop Installer is a graphical application Ximian offer a desktop OS as well as the Evolution suite - it sounds like you have selected the wrong package. Were you trying to download and following the instructions from here (www.ximian.com)? You will need to have wget installed on your system first. I would try to get Evolution from Xandros and I believe it requires librariers from Gnome which Xandros doesn't come natively with (I think) so it *should* include the additional files. Otherwise you are looking at finding the required Gnome libraries first (or installing the complete Gnome desktop environment even if you only want to use KDE everyday). Yeah, so stick with the Xandros package if possible for you sanity's sake :) |

| 228806 | 2004-04-12 09:58:00 | Stick with the xandros packages, it will be easier. A couple of things to try: 1) In xandros networks, goto edit -> update lists. It will refresh the package databases. 2) Install the update for XN mantioned on the front page (~6mb). I found it to be very flakey before installing the updates. I have also installed all of the other available updates for xandros packages. 3) If all else fails, there is a debian version available. Goto edit -> set app sources, and check debian. Then do a search for "evolution" and it will show up version 1.0 which is fairly old, but still very good. |

My thoughts as well as per Jen C > A couple of things to try: > 1) In xandros networks, goto edit - > update lists. > It will refresh the package databases. done > 2) Install the update for XN mantioned on the front > page (~6mb). I have installed "all latest updates from Xandros", is this what you mean? it did take a while to download. dejavu Windows if you ask me. > 3) If all else fails, there is a debian version > available. When I did this I came up with Evolution (no number) 8.51MB. The error - broken packages. Kmail seems to work ok but I am still 'play' mode but would like to see what all the fuss is with Evolution. cheers |

Evolution is great! :D Well worth persisting with to get installed - although it would be nice to get the 1.4 version installed. It is bascially a clone of Outlook with calenders and tasks etc plus you can have weather feeds for NZ and news feeds displayed on a summary page. I have the test version Evolution 1.5.3 on my Fedora Core 2 test 1 machine, but it is not fully functional at this stage (still undergoing development) but the new release from what I have seen so far should be good :) |

| 228809 | 2004-04-12 12:19:00 | problem solved In my *ahem* playing I somehow killed Xandros :( I reinstalled easy enough. I went to Xandros Networks and had a browse around. Found Ximian Evolution under "Shop" ( I was staying away from there as most were paid applications) I simply registered and then I was able to download and install Evolution. Another step towards total Linux - just need a dial up modem to work ( I use adsl no problem but need dial up modem for faxing purposes) Thanks sam m |
