Not sure why (unless you are trying to save disk space or cover your tracks!!). They are there to speed things up.

229049 2004-04-13 11:56:00 A reasonable sized cache is required in order to speed up the loading of pages so that the browser does not have to keep retrieving the same graphics, etc when you revisit your favourite pages .

Conversely, if the cache size is too large the browser then has lots of graphics, etc to search for on your hard drive to find the correct ones for the pages you visit . When it has to do that it gets slowed down and thus negates the advantage it would otherwise have .

When I was on dialup I had my cache size limited to 20-25MB but now that I am on JetSurf I have increased it to 50MB which is a fairly good size . I would certainly not have my cache size any larger than 50MB for a dialup connection . Internet Explorer's default settings are sometimes humongous - a laptop that I cleaned yesterday had its IE cache set to 500MB which was slightly under half of the entire hard drive!! No wonder the poor thing was reduced to a crawl . :D

People are often advised to clear their cache (Temporary Internet Files) when they are having browser and/or surfing problems as it flushes out files that may be causing problems . The other reason for clearing out the cache is when a user wishes to purge the evidence of their browsing habits .

Sometimes i question my own habits(cleaning 5mb of cache files off a 120gb drive and feelig satisfaction after doing so)

Run Disk Cleanup and clear out any piddly KBs of files wasting your space ;)

I have my cache size in Firefox set to 65536KB - 64MB, mainly because I can't stand a number like 50000KB that isn't a nice, rounded number when converted to MB. I'm on dialup, too. :)

The main difference that I've noticed between IE's cache and Firefox's is that where IE stores cached files exactly as they are, Firefox seems to clump files together into bundles of some sort.

That is a Mozilla directory name that will change any time you recreate it. In Windows look under the C:\Windows\Mozilla directory.

229053 2004-04-13 13:16:00 You may not know but IE keeps a second hidden cache that can only be cleared within the Recovery Console. I have always wondered why. What is there hidden agenda. It is one of the main reasons I will not use IE for any reason. mikebartnz (21)

That would be the index.dat files. There is a FAQ on this forum that tells you how to remove them for Windows versions prior to Win XP. ;-)

229055 2004-04-14 02:35:00 No it is not the index.dat file it is actually a hidden directory. I wish I had bookmarked the site where I was informed of it. mikebartnz (21)
