229100 2004-04-14 02:25:00 Hi,

I recently upgraded my FX5200 card to a Radeon 9800 pro. I followed the instructions and removed the FX5200 driver and control panel before rebooting and installing the the latest Radeon 9800 PRO driver (Catalyst XP 4.4)

The driver installs successfully, however under the SmartGart tab the AGP is set to AGP 0x. After attempting to set to 4x or 8x and rebooting it is reset back to 0x. I attempted using the older driver from the installation CD but the same thing happens.

I have an Intel 865PE chipset using the latest BIOS version (F9), I have not increased the AGP voltage in the BIOS as I did not know what effect this may have.

Im running Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1a.

Any ideas anyone ??

Cheers for the help.

I can't help with your problem but you can bump this up the page if it slips down the bottom too far and hopefully one of our experts will have some advice for you soon. ;-)

229102 2004-04-14 06:30:00 Hey shifty, welcome. Check to see what your agp speed is set to in your bios.

Ohhh bugga. I was just going to goto the catalyst drivers and tell you all about them for my card but I'm in linux. I'll have a look after I reboot.

229103 2004-04-14 22:58:00 Thanks for the replies guys.

I did a bit if research (well quite a lot actually!) and made a couple of discoveries.

For the card to run AGP 4x or 8x I needed AGP drivers (which are different that the display drivers) loaded, so that the OS can 'see' my AGP hardware and run the card optimally. This involves going to the motherboard manufacturer and getting the chipset drivers for my PC which includes these drivers (also USB and others..)

So after uninstalling the display drivers, going to VGA mode, installing the chipset drivers and then reinstalling the radeon drivers it was all hunky dory !

Just to show how much of a difference it made .. I originally ran Aqua Mark 3d demo benchmark software, my original score before the changes was 18,500 and after the changes ... 42,100

Enough said!
