228974 2004-04-13 09:13:00 I am about to change from "Jetstart 128k" to "Jetstream 3gb 256k" and Xtra inform me that there is no ISP fee charged for it.
So why are people paying other providers ISP fees, when they could get it free from Xtra?
What is the catch?

It occurs to me that ISP's often blame Telecom when something is wrong. As Xtra is Telecom, who do they blame?
I like the idea of all charges being on one account, less to remember.

228975 2004-04-13 09:24:00 Coz I don't want to change email address again. Yes i know I can get around that next time with an Orcon or similar a/c, but there is still 1 change needed, and you try to convince my Mrs to do it :) wotz (335)
228976 2004-04-13 09:25:00 Because the prices are the same (relatively, anyway).

Orcon: Jetstream Surf 3GB plan: $9.95 Orcon fee plus $39.95 Telecom fee (if you use Telecom for your calling) = $49.90

Xtra: Jestream Surf 3GB plan: total fee of $49.95 per month (if you use Telecom for your calling).

Note that on Xtra's website, it specifically only lists a total of $49.95 for that plan; what that means is that it can be broken down into at least two fees - most likely $39.95 to Telecom and $10 to Xtra (or similar).

Oh, and as a friend of mine says a lot, Telecom and Xtra are not one and the same, Xtra is a different company.

228977 2004-04-13 09:34:00 In their press release telecom said that the wholesale charges are somewhat less, like what Orcon add's its 9.95 to. Growly (6)
228978 2004-04-13 09:39:00 Just like asking

"Why doesn't everybody support National?"

Xtra misinform you. There is still an 'ISP charge' it's just they integrate it together as a package as being both Telco and ISP they can do that and present it all pretty on one bill.

Back in the bad old days, Xtra didn't have to blame Telecom as they were heavily favoured by their parent company. There was rather a large uproar when the other ISP's constantly getting bitched at for poor service, slow speeds and 'lines being busy' when it was uncovered that Telecom were dropping other ISP lines and bandwidth on the IPNet service in favour of Xtra.

You also need to understand that Xtra is an operating branch of Telecom, when ISP's 'blame Telecom' it's usually because of poor quality phone lines etc, you can still have the same problem with Telecom.

A customer in Kaitaia that has a poor connection is going to have the same poor connection with Paradise, Xtra, Clear, anyone as regardless of what ISP they use, it's the same phone line and the exact same kit they connect to.

228982 2004-04-13 23:50:00 Cause Xtra/Telecom is a huge faceless monopoly that rips of everyone at every chance it gets.
Anyone ever wonder what they charge a line maintance fee for on your ph bill???

Um, maintenance of your lines?

If there's a problem and they identify that it's your home wiring, and you pay the maintenance fee it doesn't cost to get it repaired.
