229417 2004-04-15 06:16:00 Hi Folks!

I just transferred a hard drive into an old Celeron 466. I managed to get it booting into Windows ME, but then it just shuts down as soon as it's booted.

Any ideas why and what to do about it?

Joe

229421 2004-04-15 11:34:00 Sorry dude,
but computers have specific config's you can't take a hard drive from one computer and stick it into another without forrmatting h/drive and re-loading o/s unless they are identical configs.
I stand to be corrected.

229422 2004-04-16 06:01:00 I just had a thought . :)

Based on advice given by Terry Porrit in relation to applying Ghost images to different computers, take a look at this:

Your OS on the C: partition will spit and cough if you try to run it in the new machine after copying over, because all the hardware is different .

What you want to do BEFORE removing your existing drive, OR copying to the new one, is to go to Device Manager, and remove EVERY single device from there, including all the PCI stuff, every bit, mouse last of all .

Dont let the stripped down drive boot into windows while it is attached to the old computer or it will put all the devices back again .

Then you can transfer the HDD to the new computer, and when the drive is booted Windows will re-detect all the hardware .

It's worth a try if you still have the old machine .

229423 2004-04-16 06:06:00 ,Under XP you cant remove the devices because the OS finds them immediatly and reinstalls them....

Yeah yeah, most already know this but it may be importent info for someone intending to move a harddrive containing XP into another machine.

229424 2004-04-16 11:12:00 We are dealing with ME here though metla.

Would XP do that in safe mode? Seems a bit tough to auto-reinstall if you genuinely want to get rid of a piece of hardware.

229425 2004-04-16 11:24:00 well XP auto-reinstalls so people who go on an un-installing spree cant stuff it up agent_24 (4330)

Yeah,i realise that,i was just adding in a bit of related but not directly to the thread issue info.

Your comment on safe mode is a good point, although i would guess last time i attempted it i would have tried safe mode.

If i didnt then i defneitly should have.
