229262 2004-04-14 09:25:00 I have a laptop running WinME and a desktop running Win98SE. For many months they successfully talked to each other via an ethernet connection. I tried to add a 3rd computer (a Mac) and now none of the computers will access each other, even after removing the hub and connecting the laptop and desktop directly again. Ping runs fine in both directions (and also to and from the Mac when it was still connected). I have tried removing and reinstalling the network cards and networking (using TCP/IP as originally). The problem may be a result of trying to redo the network using different IP addresses, but even returning to the original ones doesn't help (although ping still goes fine on the old addresses). Is there any way of checking what IP address networking is trying to use - and if so, can it be changed? robinh (5526)

Try using ipconfig and reporting the results back.

229264 2004-04-14 20:21:00 or "winipcfg" for 98. Not sure which command is used in ME
Another thing worth a quick look is workgroup name, I think they must be in the same workgroup

229265 2004-04-17 14:28:00 I change my network round a lot, and frequently have this problem. The solution? Start another network service that you can run in the background between the two machines, something that doesn't rely on the windows explorer functions too much. Then open network neighbourhood and browse the other machine. (Do this for both PCs). Make sure file sharing is enabled. Then reboot both machines while still connected. I use Real VNC for the background service - If you can get the ping to go, this will go (but you have to turn off your firewalls, or allow server permissions). Get it at http://www.realvnc.com. Once you do this, the windows machines should be sorted out, although I don't know about the mac - I don't have much experience with these.

Hope this helps,
Steve

229266 2004-04-21 08:42:00 Thanks for the suggestions... Ipconfig (etc) showed exactly what they should have on both windows machines, but I now seem to have solved the problem by deREMing the line "net start" in the autoexec.bat file on the Win98SE machine - the network program seems to REM it again every time it's run! I can't see the Mac on the network, but I can trasfer stuff via ftp etc. so I can do what I need to with the network. robinh (5526)

229268 2004-04-29 11:15:00 Thanks for the link to joel shoemaker. I can now access the PCs from the Mac, but when I try the other way, it asks for a password, and none of the passwords I use on the Mac or PCs seem to be acceptable! (However ftp still works from PCs to Mac!). robinh (5526)
229269 2004-05-04 07:14:00 This is probably because you are using win98
to solve this, set up the mac with a new use account - the same username and password as you have on the windows machines.

Then gave this account access permissions for the stuff you need to get at. When the win machine asks for a password, just give it the one you use to log on to windows, and if it asks for a user give it that too.

Hope this helps
Steve

229270 2004-05-05 02:21:00 The Mac's passwords will probably be "CaSe SeNsItIvE". ;-) Graham L (2)
