229914 2004-04-16 22:43:00 Hi, I am using Windows ME, and I can't get any restore dates on the Systems Restore. genie (5534)
229915 2004-04-17 01:14:00 Hi genie

Is your system fully up to date with Windows Update patches? Also take a look at this Troubleshooting System Restore in Windows Millennium Edition (support.microsoft.com) guide.

If that doesn't help, post back here with the specific error message or steps you are following when the problem occurs.

I have the same problem. I used your link and it seemed on the surface that it was exactly what I needed. However I faithfully carried the instructions, checking multiple times that I had correctly typed in "Wininit.ini" file but none was found. The last process is to run the following command to repair the damaged portions of my registry

scanreg /fix (also tried scanreg/fix)
but that was not recognised.

I run, of course, Windows ME. As per the specific problem it is that when I try to make a restore point I am asked to re-boot the machine, which makes no difference.

Any other suggestions please ?

229917 2004-06-17 09:04:00 Hi Misty :)

Are you getting this error message: "System Restore cannot run until you restart the computer. Please restart the computer, and then run System Restore again" as described here (support.microsoft.com)?

The wininit.ini file should only be present if you have an incomplete installation of a program/update? Did you have trouble with something like this recently?

You can find instructions on how to run scanreg here (support.microsoft.com). You will need your WinME installation disc handy.

That is precisely the message the message that I get. I did religiously carry out the instructions in the first part of your response but no joy. As I said it could not find the file referred to.

Have looked up and printed out the second link you have given. Maybe I am not running scanreg /fix in the correct way.

I have tried a number of ways including -
(1) Going to Start > Run > entering scanreg /fix then ok
(2) Going to the DOS prompt and entering scanreg /fix (both in the root directory and the Windows directory and then Enter.

(3) Doing the same as the above in (2) but entering the word run in front
(4) Doing the same as above but entering .exe after.

This all sound a bit naive but I have only my limited knowledge and the DOS manual etc - your link is clear to those with slightly more than basic knowledge - but somewhere it seems that I am deficient !!

229919 2004-06-20 03:53:00 As far as I know, Microsoft shipped Me with System restore notworking. :-(

I went confidently to fix the neighbour's system with System Restore, a month after purchase. No restore points. :-( I reloaded Windows with the recovery CD,and made sure that SR was enabled and set up to make a restore point once a week. The second time, guess what? I reloaded Windows from the recovery CD. :_|

Get the free Security Update CD from Microsoft and it will automatically install the "working" version of System Restore. I haven't needed to use it again.

(use the Search on this page with "windows update free cd" to get the URL for the CD)

Sorry Graham L :8}, but I am going have to correct you there ;) :), sorry :8}

Microsoft shipped Me with System restore WORKING BUT there was/is a date bug in it that mean that System restore will stop working after a date last year or was it the year after that, I cant remember now (Plus I am now using xp so I cant look it up in windows update), but they should be something on windows update or on the MS web site about this.

If you still can’t find the patch reply back & I will boot in to my Win ME HD & look it up for you :)

229921 2004-06-20 08:27:00 Thanks Graham
I had got hold of a Windows Security Update CD. Microsoft shipped it to me very quickly following my request. It had been sitting there doing nothing and from the posts to PressF1 I had concluded that the best use would be if I sometime need to do a format of the hard disc.

Nevertheless - following your advice I used the disc (or at least the relevent one of two) and it took marginally less than 1/2 hour. The PC re-booted three times and "hey presto" when I checked I was given the chance to create a restore point !! I will now be more confident when trying something which might have some degree of risk.

Thanks again
