229754 2004-04-16 07:56:00 need small rpm based distro to use apache emacs and php mysql on

ok I have a friend who needs the above

his machine is a P90
800mB Hd
48 Mb ram network card cdrom etc
currently runnig RH7.1 or 7.2
accessed via ssh
and runs ok
but needs something smaller as he wants to use a more recent version of emacs as the gui interface for emacs is apparently pretty hideous and also he is running out of space, this is just used as a testing server for him and he is familiar with rpm based distros,
is there one out there that will do what is required
he is looking at going back to redhat 6, but well I think that there must be a better option, a stripped out version designed soly for use as a server or testing server.
thanks Nigel

229755 2004-04-18 03:24:00 you might be able to try clarkconnect? I'm not sure if it's rpm based though... whetu (237)
229756 2004-04-18 03:44:00 I have a horrible idea that a "modern" GUI based emacs will use a lot of your 800 MB disk. :D

Similarly, the "modern" GUIs need enormous libraries, toolkits and scripting languages like Python. :-(

229758 2004-04-18 03:45:00 just remembered. there is a distro, tomsbrt

229759 2004-04-18 04:42:00 toms is a recovery disk. It's very useful. But it won't fit emacs on the floppy. Even if you leave out Eliza. :D Graham L (2)
229760 2004-04-18 23:51:00 I'd recommend Slackware / Vector Linux (Namely Vector for 'aging' hardware).

Both come with rpm capabilities although they use slack paks for their main Package Management System.

Check out Vector Linux....

Chill.
